Dr Davy Kiprotich Koech who died last night rose from a humble background to become a world-renowned immunologist and researcher
At just the age of 28, he helped found and fundraise for KEMRI, a state corporation responsible for carrying out research in human health in Kenya.
After graduating from the University of Nairobi with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry and Zoology in April 1974, he proceeded to Duquesne University in Pennsylvania, USA where he acquired a Master of Science in Pharmacology specialising in Clinical Pharmacology.
He would later pursue his PhD in Medical Pathology, Immunology from the University of Nairobi, undertaking his research at Harvard University Medical School, Boston, MA, USA in 1980.
While pursuing his PhD, Koech and some of his colleagues became concerned about the refusal of the University of Nairobi’s Medical School to set up a research wing. As a result, together with Prof Kihumbu Thairu and Prof Mutuma Mugambi, they decided to lobby for the establishment of a premier research institution within UoN medical school.
To set up such an institution, they first approached Attorney General Charles Njonjo for the amendment of the Science and Technology Act of 1977. But the biggest obstacle was getting funds for the facility.
After spending months pleading with the Ministry of Health, the US government through the ministry gave them a grant of USD72,000, but the money just disappeared into thin air. " I have no idea where that money went. It just disappeared,” Koech would later recall.
Later on, while visiting the State House as part of a delegation, Moi called him aside and asked him “Koech, I am making an official trip to Japan. Is there anything you would wish for me to request in your area?” Moi had already observed his research interest. Koech immediately brought up the issue of KEMRI. Moi agreed and returned from Japan with good news. The Japanese had agreed to fund KEMRI.
With time he became one of Moi’s close confidantes. But his career was also not free from controversy, especially the 1990 KEMRON saga when together with KEMRI's Chief Researcher, Doctor Arthur Obel, they claimed to have developed a drug which could cure HIV/AIDS and went on to reveal that 50 people had been cured.
They even made Moi announce the discovery. Unfortunately when the drug was placed under scrutiny by international scientists and organisations such as WHO, it was found not to be better than placebo ( a drug used to deceive patients that they are getting better). The embarrassed KEMRI finally withdrew the drug.
In 2006 , after decades at the helm of the research institution, Dr Koech was accused of corruptly transferring Ksh. 19.3 million meant for Kisumu Center for Disease Control to his personal bank account.
The court found him guilty and ordered him to refund the money or face a six-year jail term. The 73-year-old who was suffering from poor health was unable to raise the money within the agreed period and was consequently sent to jail where he collapsed several times in the washroom. He was later pardoned by President William Ruto.
Nevertheless Koech will be remembered as a Kenyan pioneer in the field of molecular medicine and Immunology, especially his leading role in the establishment of KEMRI. May his soul rest in peace.
