Reno, NV police responded to a call about a man on a bridge. The caller claimed they were concerned with his safety. When the officers arrived they tried to de-escalate the situation and spent over 20 minutes trying to get 27-year-old Michael Johnson to drop the knife he had. Mr. Johnson refused to do so and eventually charged an officer with a large chain and the knife in his pocket. The officer being charged decided to perform an impromptu ballistic test with his Sig P320 which resulted in Mr. Jonhson's death. I’m not defending this, but I also think Americans should know Venezuela is a narcostate. It’s not hyperbole. Their government is literally linked to the drug cartels sending this poison to the United States. Addiction has a massive financial and social cost, especially in rural areas. Our past policy has been ineffective in stopping this. I don’t think that means kidnapping their president is a good policy, but I don’t want this to be reduced to another “America bad” talking point.

The reason government programs are so inefficient is that, unlike a commercial company, the feedback loop for improvement is broken, because they have a state-mandated monopoly and can’t go out of business if customers are unhappy. No matter how bad the service is at your DMV (sorry to pick on DMVs), you still have to use your DMV, because it’s a monopoly.
