US offers pardon to Venezuela's Maduro to step down in secret talks.
He can go to Turkey, he has a house there and probably has stashed money away.
This is a good solution: he leaves to live in secret as a billionaire, and a new government can take over democratically.
The problem is that he is not the real head of state and is supported by narcos.
The talks took place virtually between Jorge Rodríguez, president of Venezuela's congress and a Maduro confidant, and Daniel Erikson, who directs Venezuela policy at the White House National Security Council.
These dictators are rich as hell and could live in luxury for the rest of their lives. But power is a hell of a drug.
Yemen's former dictator Saleh won a civil war and then conquered South Yemen, ruled for 22 years before being forced to step down by the Saudis during the Arab spring protests.
Rather than take all his money and go live the rest of his life in a tropical resort, the 68 year old Saleh teamed up with his former hated enemies the Houthis and launched a civil war in Yemen. He lasted 2 years before the Houthis put a bullet in his head.
I just can't comprehend that kind of power trip that makes these people stay in power until they drop dead.
It is super dangerous for them to step down due to how many enemies they have. They need somewhere secure and guarantees they wont be taken out. Otherwise it could be suicide to retire.
Putin would not be safe if he retired in Russia.
The US and its regional partners want two things from Venezuela: (1) fewer refugees and (2) more oil on the market.
A post-Maduro free-market democracy in Venezuela makes both easier. A revived economy there could even reverse migration flows, bringing back many members of the diaspora.
This election was a potential off-ramp for Maduro. That’s why the US pushed for it. It looks like he’s passing on the opportunity.
He going to find an array of pretty powerful actors in his neighbourhood all with interests aligned in removing him, realizing that he’s not going to go voluntarily, and contemplating alternative means.
