@AidanNeal_UK @AgnesCallamard If putting your moral convictions into practice involves breaking a police officer’s spine with a sledgehammer than you belong in prison.

@AgnesCallamard Very sad. There was a time in Britain when people thought going to prison in the course of putting your moral convictions into practice in Britain was a thing of the past.

This research by Queen Mary University of London should be a wake up call for the UK government and judicial institutions: 286 political prisoners in Britain, held in relation to their activism for Palestinian rights or against fossil fuel. Prison sentences for acts of direct action or civil disobedience (which were once rare) are now being imposed with increasing length and frequency. In Great Britain. theguardian.com/law/2026/may/2…

Imagine celebrating the destruction of women's rights, bodily autonomy and the othering of women. Imagine celebrating segregation. Imagine celebrating the reduction of womanhood to reproductive organs. Imagine celebrating the violence towards those that are other.

@johndotwills The question is whether the incentive exists (under your scheme) and I think the OP is absolutely correct that it does exist, and references to public sector balance sheet value (rather than the £ a person actually receives) doesn’t explain that away.

@johndotwills By actual value I mean what a buyer pays to a now owner (previously tenant) who sells their now owned house in your scheme. I agree 10 years is a long time, but that’s a separate question about whether the incentive is strong enough.

@MFishwreck @Birdyword I enjoyed how ‘bond vigilantes’ (when the market was doing something he doesn’t like) became ‘bond investors’ (when they were doing something he did like).

@Birdyword ‘Shifty bond holders’ : you know, the people who fund the bridge between public expectation and reality. And in what planet is a mild sell off of Gilts encouragement to borrow more?!

"Conversely, a mild selloff of gilts often signals that investors expect fiscal plans – that is, government spending – to deliver growth. In other words, good news for the economy is bad news for shifty bond holders." Often? How often recently?

Strongly recommend @DanielaGabor’s step by step account of what’s really happening with bond markets - and how to really deal with them without wishful thinking. (The “Bailey premium” we pay govt borrowing costs also deserves wider circulation.) Link below.

Nationalise Morrisons, use it as the foundation for a new, publicly-owned grocery store selling high quality, affordable food. National-level version of the Mamdani plan in New York. Need to think big in a world with repeated, major shocks to essential supply systems.

@Joe_Dromey @EducationNotTax @thefabians Private schools had no tax advantage. They had the same tax position as all other charities. What is your comparator for this supposed ‘advantage’?

@EducationNotTax @thefabians The evidence I’ve seen suggests there has been no significant increase in the closure rate of private schools. I don’t think that private schools should have a tax advantage, and I think it’s perfectly reasonable to charge VAT on fees.

These are devastating results for Labour, far beyond the usual mid-term blues. We need to listen to the voters, and learn the right lessons. That’s what we’ll be looking to do at @thefabians in the coming months.

@SteveSmith_cam @LukeTryl 1. It’s getting worse, not better. 2. What measures have Labour brought in that you think will reverse that but need time to take effect? 3. What measures are they talking about bringing in that will reverse that?

Except thats not true is it. Intifada means uprising or shaking off. So the question is is it illegitimate to call for global support for Palestinians struggling for liberation from oppression. That is not the same as supporting violence against civilians.
Dave Rich@daverich1

It’s very simple: the Intifada was a campaign of suicide bombings, shootings and stabbings that killed hundreds of Israeli civilians. Calling for it to be “globalised” means bringing it here. That isn’t “criticising Israel”. It’s inciting violent hatred.

@ColumDelaney Supporting a campaign of suicide bombing is degeneracy Colum. Supporting it because its victims were Jews is racist. You’re a horrid little racist.

You're a bright lad @owenjonesjourno. What did you think the slogan "Globalise The Intifada" meant? It means "Kill Jews Across The Globe". Don't pretend to be surprised and upset when people act on the slogan.

@ColumDelaney Look at you squirming and trying to change the subject. You know that supporting a campaign of suicide bombings against Jews makes you racist, don’t you Colum? You know that you wouldn’t support a campaign of suicide bombing against other groups. So you change the subject.

@ColumDelaney @JuliaHB1 @owenjonesjourno Ah diddums. Poor little Colum wants to support the second intifada but can’t deal with the fact that supporting killing Jews makes him a racist. You like to imagine yourself as one of the good people don’t you Colum? But you also want to be able to support killing Jews.

@ColumDelaney @JuliaHB1 @owenjonesjourno Ha ha, you don’t even realise that your refusal to acknowledge that the second intifada included a campaign of suicide bombings targeted at Jewish civilians is only more proof of your racism. You’re a bear of very little brain, like most racists.
