Chatham #Ontario is on the map today for a Ruby Throated #hummingbird. Feeders up everyone. Slow start this spring that's for sure. This is one of the latest first sightings since the project began.

@ggirl1968 The sightings this year weren't low, but they were slightly later than normal. Sightings of course are one of those right time, right place situations. For example, I get a few April sightings as they whiz by, but I can't always stare out the window. By May, they are every day.

@onhummingbird 👋🏻 curious. I am in the GTA area and this time last year I had already seen a few hummingbirds pass through my backyard. This year I haven’t seen any. Put my feeders up first week of April with our warmer temperatures thought they would be early. Are the sightings low this year?

Just saw a female #RubyThroatedHummingbird at our feeder very heavy with egg. Given a 5-6 week laying to fledgling time, it's awfully late in the season! Any thoughts @onhummingbird?

@PfOrganicsJenn Honestly, I am not too concerned. There is lots of summer left for them to have one last brood. If she lays within the next week, the babies should still have enough time to fatten up before they leave. A good reminder to keep your feeders up late!

@zeissikon1 That is a male ruby throat. Male rufous hummingbirds have brown all over, including their backs.

@GBotaitis I am predicting early migrants this week with the main wave either last week of April or first week of May depending on weather. This week's weather may advance many of the early migrants.

#hummingbird season is starting off with a bang! (Storms that is). After these storms pass, expect migration to accelerate. Get ready #Ontario and #Quebec.

@GBotaitis In an urban area, it can be more of a challenge. However, being close to a waterway has its advantages since many hummingbirds follow waterways on their migration. You may get some visits during spring and fall migration. If there is habitat nearby, you may get them all season.

@onhummingbird I’ve JUST hung a hummingbird feeder on my front porch/patio/garden area in hopes to attract them? I live in London Ontario only a km from the Thames River where I’ve seen hummingbirds often. So what are the odds they will sniff out my feeder and if so…when?

@wilkiedesk The map isn't reflecting 2023 because there aren't sightings on the board yet. Once we have a sighting, the map will show them. We have confirmed that our site is ready to receive sightings.
