Well, that day has arrived. I'm going to miss a lot of you, although hopefully most can reconnect via the contact details below. But on here, it's Ohm out.

I don't like the look of the new terms of service that come into force on 16/01/2026, so I'll be leaving Twitter on 15/01/2026. I can be reached on Mastodon @only_ohm@mas.to Bluesky (sort of) @only-ohm.mas.to.ap.brid.gy E-mail twitteronlyohm@btinternet.com

@WhoCraved Wouldn't it have been The Impossible Astronaut she had to watch three times?
English

@adam_tooze The claim as worded in the quoted tweet, though, is unremarkable, isn't it? Wouldn't one normally expect more than a third of the population of an area to die of natural causes in a 30-year period?
English

Worth noting that these data are a little bit controversial around the edges and that the original author of this particular map was a bona fide Nazi historian appointed to a chair in Strasbourg in 1940. But was the 30 years war the original modern German apocalypse. YES IT WAS.
Die ganze Geschichte@GanzeGeschichte
During the Thirty Years' War between 1618 and 1648, more than one in three inhabitants of Germany died, around 6 million people. Dark brown on this map indicates a population loss of more than 60% in the respective region.

@andueza330 Rewatched Spyfall Part 1 recently, and struck by the Master asking the Doc to give him permission to torture the captured Kasaavin for information. Thinking he aspires to turn the Doctor evil the way the Doc (sort of) turned him good in the Missy arc.

@LiamPrice413 @pheebs_18 For exactly that reason, I suggest interpreting "carbon 46" to mean a molecule with 46 carbon atoms, rather than a carbon nucleus with a mass number of 46. That would make them the very nanoest of nanodiamonds.
English

@pheebs_18 Actually "Carbon 46" is one of the most annoying things in the episode. The biggest known stable Carbon is Carbon 22. Carbon 12 accounts for the majority of Carbon, including diamonds. The difference between Diamonds and other Carbon 12 is the structure, which has no number.

@GBPolitcs @Telegraph I thought cousin marriage was illegal. Common sense.
English

🚨NEW: The White House has attacked Sir Keir Starmer over his refusal to ban cousin marriage, calling it a "civilisational concern"

@Nickolarge @paulrmosley @ElectionMapsUK @DPJHodges @YouGov (Of course, comparisons with Israel a little dubious anyway: Netanyahu is a guy who runs around massacring tens of thousands of civilians, so it'd be naive to think he wouldn't also indulge in a bit of ballot-box-stuffing.)
English

@Nickolarge @paulrmosley @ElectionMapsUK @DPJHodges @YouGov I presume the "Israeli one" you're talking about is % of people who actually vote, rather than % of registered voters? I thought our numerical reference point was this YG poll, which appears not to reallocate "don't know"s, which makes it closer to "% of registered voters".
English

Westminster Voting Intention:
RFM: 24% (-2)
CON: 20% (+1)
LAB: 19% (+2)
LDM: 16% (=)
GRN: 14% (-2)

@GarrettPetersen Unrequited love is one thing, but I've never really understood sexual jealousy. Like, if someone I fancy is getting some good lovin', why is that supposed to present a problem for me?
English

Is it just me, or did people used to feel broadly sympathetic towards people who experience unrequited love? OP sounds like a teenager.
"The girl I like is dating someone else" is a scene you used to give to a movie protagonist to make him sympathetic and relatable.

SSPX incels having a normal one!
English

@Nickolarge @paulrmosley @ElectionMapsUK @DPJHodges @YouGov Err... may I remind you that Labour got the votes of just 20.1% of registered voters in 2024, so it's Netanyahu *and* Starmer.
English

@paulrmosley @ElectionMapsUK @DPJHodges @YouGov And the results of that confirm around 25% support for Reform.
Only Netanyahu gets to be a PM on that level of support.
English

@Matt56404055206 @ElectionMapsUK @YouGov I've said this at the last six general elections, so perhaps sound like a stuck record, but my advice to the LDs and Greens would be: *no coalitions*, instead make ministers govern without a whipped majority and justify their policies on a case-by-case basis.
English

@ElectionMapsUK @YouGov Labour-LD-Green coalition after the next GE will be interesting. Could be a chance for a real Democratic Socialist style of government lile the happiest countries in the world - the Nordics.
