Collating the Chapman Survey of Paranormal opinions in US. The following are agree+strongly agree. Note, I've largely given up the word "believe" for such things questions. I think "entertain" an idea is better Aliens in the Past 2015: 20% 2016: 27% 2017: 35% 2018: 41% 2021: 43%

in english you can say “french exit” to mean leaving without saying goodbye. in french you can say “spanish hostel” to mean a chaotic state of affairs. what are some other good examples (in any language) of a foreign nationality being used as a stand alone pejorative?

So they built a whole working off-grid community and y'all are just knocking it down.
Edmonton Police@edmontonpolice

Police say it is one of most elaborate encampments they have ever seen, with a mini-power grid, including solar panels, and multiple home appliances. The encampment was discovered last week by the City of Edmonton and Edmonton Police Service joint response encampment team. It was almost completely camouflaged and included four multi-level structures surrounded by a fence made of trees and broken branches. The structures had been built without nails or other forms of support and were at risk of collapse. Inside, police and park rangers found fire-stoves with lit fires, a stone fireplace, stone/marble flooring, a working fridge and washing machine, and live electrical wires strung haphazardly. Power was supplied by four generators, with solar panels powering a chop shop for stolen bikes. 15 weapons, including three guns, and about $8000 worth of stolen goods were recovered. Police have so far returned 2 backpack blowers and 1 mountain bike to their rightful owners. 20 violation tickets were written, and 10 warrants executed. The encampment caused significant environmental damage to the trees and root systems, and the nearby creek was dammed in multiple places to provide running water to one of the structures. The encampment has since been dismantled. Those living in it were offered access to services and supports, which they refused.

My faculty colleagues and I have been banned from Widener Library for two weeks to punish us for reading quietly while displaying quotations from the Library's statement of values
The Harvard Crimson@thecrimson

Roughly 25 Harvard professors conducted a silent study-in at Widener Library on Wednesday to protest the library’s decision to temporarily ban pro-Palestine students who held a similar demonstration last month. @tillyrobin and @neilhshah15 report. thecrimson.com/article/2024/1…

it’s crazy to me that in just two years we’ve effectively destroyed the internet for the sake of a product whose only discernible use is helping students cheat on their homework.

@shinystellachen @mkwatra427 @NicoleAMaines masculine women have been accused of being men for far longer than there’s been trans activism. you are just delusional. for years everyone online was assumed to be male unless they said they weren’t. not because of trans activism but because of regular old sexism.
