James Tolkan has died at 94. "Son, your ego's writing checks your body can't cash." - Top Gun (1986) This scene is a masterclass in movie shorthand. In seconds you get Maverick’s attitude, his history, how he flies, and the entire setup. And Tolkan absolutely nails it.

In Romeo + Juliet (1996), Leonardo DiCaprio couldn’t like any actresses for Juliet role. But he realized Claire Danes was the right actress just for one specific reason: “She was the only girl that looked me in the eye in audition.”

I’ve been posting about The Firm more recently because I can’t get over this cast’s excellence. Gene Hackman doesn’t have a lot of screen time here, but his moments shared with Tom Cruise last a lifetime. I’m a sucker for any John Grisham adaptation- especially this one.

The opera scene in The Shawshank Redemption (1994), when Andy plays The Marriage of Figaro over the prison loudspeakers, wasn’t in the original novella. Stephen King later said it was one of the best moments ever added to one of his adaptations.

Last Tuesday, when the Gaudreaus were invited to the Olympics, they declined. This was Johnny's dream. It felt bittersweet. But by Wednesday, everything changed. “My mom was like, ‘I didn’t sleep. I think John would want us to go. I think we should go'" inquirer.com/flyers/johnny-…

NEW: Team USA honors Johnny Gaudreau, who was killed by an alleged drunk driver, by bringing his kids on the ice. Gaudreau was set to make the U.S. Olympics team before he & his brother were hit by a car in August of 2024. His kids are now 2 and 3. 🇺🇸

This image of Jack Hughes—battle-scarred, missing a tooth, with a pure American grin while draped in the Stars and Stripes after Team USA pinned Canada face-down 2-1 in OT for Olympic gold, will go down as one of the most iconic sporting photos of the 21st century.

💔 Forrest Gump — the moment Jenny introduces Forrest to his son This scene is quiet, simple, and absolutely devastating. Forrest’s first reaction isn’t joy or shock — it’s fear. He asks if his son is smart, because all he’s ever known is being told he wasn’t. In just a few lines, the movie hits on love, insecurity, and generational healing. It’s one of the most human moments in cinema — proof that sometimes the strongest scenes don’t need speeches, just honesty.

The movie Unbroken is based on the almost unbelievable true story of Louis Zamperini, an Olympic runner turned World War II bombardier who survived a plane crash in the Pacific Ocean, drifted on a raft for 47 days, fought off sharks, endured near-starvation, and then spent over two years being brutally beaten and tortured as a prisoner of war in Japan. Despite all of this, he lived to be 97 years old and even forgave his captors later in life. Angelina Jolie directed the film, and it was so emotionally intense that some of the actors lost weight to look more authentic during the POW scenes. The resilience Louis showed was so legendary that the Japanese guards nicknamed him “The Immortal.”
