"I'm glad that plan isn't going to work out, but I'm not sure why the director continues to pursue it after the information he received." Our Research & Advocacy Director @anotherpanacea quoted in @washingtonpost

We need solutions that actually help young people — not recycled plans for condemned buildings. DC should invest in community-based alternatives, not more detention capacity.

DYRS Director Sam Abed told DC Council he's pursuing a Maryland facility to address youth detention overcrowding. Problem: Maryland already told him no. And the building? It's the same juvenile jail he closed as "wholly decrepit" when he ran Maryland DJS. wapo.st/4pcJP1P

I was honored last week to join @DCJusticeLab Policy Training Academy. Here's a photo of all the powerful advocates at the Community Safety Fair, as well as information about our campaign to expunge juvenile records. Let's close those juvenile records and open futures!

Season's greetings from Open City Advocates! I'm so proud of our team and the work we do to get children home for the holidays instead of languishing behind bars. To read about what we've accomplished in 2024, click on our annual report (link in the comments).

“When we as a city decide to remove a child from their family and incarcerate them… we are collectively responsible to ensure that that child goes to an appropriate placement and receives tailored services as soon as possible.” @wlouchheim washingtoncitypaper.com/article/753584…

Hey @AlexKomaWCP, great article on Court Social Services and youth probation in the District! Lots of great quotes, but this one really stood out to me:

@NateBalis on detention: “Kids are more likely, not less likely, to be arrested when they get out. We should never be casual with our use of detention, and if young people are detained, we should be working every day to figure out how we can get them out.” washingtoncitypaper.com/article/744450…

When parents are unemployed or earn low wages, they have fewer opportunities to access resources that support their child’s development, which has been found to negatively affect a child’s health and academic performance. 2024 KIDS COUNT Data Book: bit.ly/3yOPrKr

Fantastic work by CCE, that highlights the ways in which failures to coordinate between agencies leave kids maximally in need of care unprotected. It's another reason why at @opencityadv we've been calling for DC's Ombudsman for Children to be granted oversight over DYRS.

As members of CCE's Youth Justice Committee, we have strongly supported this report since its inception, and were proud to contribute our expertise in post-disposition representation and knowledge of DYRS's practices. We see these crossover failures firsthand all the time!
