Burying restaurants in paperwork and complicated applications widens the gap between who gets vibrant outdoor dining and who doesn't — and it hits low-income neighborhoods hardest. Simplify the process. Make the program year-round. Every neighborhood deserves this!
Streetsblog New York City@StreetsblogNYC

June is a week away and nearly 1,000 restaurants are still waiting for their outdoor dining permits. What's the holdup? A failed program devised by former Mayor Eric Adams and the last City Council under Speaker Adrienne Adams, explains @kduggan16.

The dense districts of western Queens offer the best chance for Mayor Mamdani to introduce low-traffic neighborhoods to New York City, according to local advocates who discussed the car-light concept at a recent meetup in Mamdani’s former neighborhood. nyc.streetsblog.org/2026/05/20/mam…

Mayor Mamdani could make the World's Borough the "envy of the world" with Low Traffic Neighborhoods! “Communities are eager for calmer, safer streets that bring people together. LTNs build on that momentum.” nyc.streetsblog.org/2026/05/20/mam…

“Mayor Mamdani challenged us to make our streetscape the envy of the world, and this budget invests in DOT’s ability to provide streets that are safer and better for everyone — whether they’re walking to school, biking to work, riding the bus, or driving across town.”
Streetsblog New York City@StreetsblogNYC

Mayor Mamdani has earmarked more than $200 million in new funding in his executive budget for bus lanes, bike lanes and public realm projects over the next four years. nyc.streetsblog.org/2026/05/19/mam…

We must continue to protect the health and safety of all Bronxites. Any highway expansion does the opposite, so let's commit to reimagining the corridor and reducing VMT! @BxRiverAlliance @TransAltBX_Up @TransAlt

A win for the Bronx and all of NYC! The relentless advocacy from the Stop the Cross Bronx Expansion Coalition and community members is paying off!! A testament to what’s possible when communities come together and put people first!

NY State is stopping plans to repair and widen 5 bridges along the Cross Bronx Expressway after a long fight with local residents who objected to the plan on the grounds that a wider highway would bring even more cars and traffic to a noted asthma alley. buff.ly/LmkLGeX

“When people can access your streets, when they can walk comfortably and enjoy their experience, people will come more often... It’s not just the regulars. You’re going to get people who are out for a bike ride [and] tourists who are going from park to park.”

We encourage DOT and the City Council to work together to expedite year-round outdoor dining legislation. New Yorkers and small businesses deserve a program that's simple, predictable, and built to last. @NYCCouncil @NYC_DOT @NYCComptroller

Outdoor dining has helped transform public space across NYC — making streets more welcoming, social, and vibrant. We appreciate Comptroller @MarkLevineNYC taking a closer look at the barriers slowing the program down.
