This $20M is essential. It can be used to hire more DOE school staff to manage the program, conduct outreach to potential schools, and provide assistance during the application process and throughout the life of their School Street.

This program increases street safety and reduces air and noise pollution, while providing space for recess, play, outdoor learning, and community health. This is particularly important for overcrowded or co-located schools.

On the campaign trail, Mayor Mamdani promised $20 million for the School Streets program, but so far it’s not in the budget. Today is the Council Committee on Education's Preliminary Budget Hearing, so we hope they step up to fund school streets. Here’s why this is so important…
