Nuclear superpowers healthcare. From sterilizing medical devices to diagnosing and treating illnesses like cancer, nuclear medicine helps save lives and protects the health of millions here and around the world. And it wouldn't be possible without Ontario’s nuclear generating fleet, which produces the critical isotopes that enable powerful treatments and diagnostics. It’s one more reason Ontario’s electricity is our superpower.

On International Day for Biological Diversity, OPG is proud to spotlight our decades-long partnership with @DUContario (DUC). What began as a major wetland restoration project at OPG’s Lennox Generating Station in 1981 has grown into a meaningful collaboration that’s helped conserve and restore important wetlands across Ontario — supporting biodiversity while also strengthening natural flood mitigation. In 2020, OPG collaborated with TC Energy to expand the Lennox wetland habitat near Napanee, a priority region for wildlife conservation. Developed with consultation from DUC, the wetland now helps manage nearby agricultural runoff while also serving as a habitat oasis for waterfowl and other birds, including herons.

In this #HeritageHighlight, we go back to the 1960s when a true nuclear pioneer began to take shape on the shores of Lake Ontario. Construction on OPG's Pickering Nuclear Generating Station started in 1965, kicking off a legacy of clean, reliable power that continues to this very day. The station's first units began producing power in 1971, with more units coming online through the '70s and '80s. Today, we're writing the next chapter in Pickering Nuclear's story as we plan for the refurbishment of the station's Units 5 to 8. Ontario's next major nuclear refurbishment project will secure more than 2,100 MW of clean, reliable power and create thousands of jobs. Learn more about the station and its future: bit.ly/4dQYIn7

Congratulations to OPG subsidiary @aturapower on the commissioning of the new Napanee Battery Energy Storage System. This is an important step to enhancing the reliability and resilience of Ontario's grid for the years ahead.
Stephen Lecce@Sflecce

Ontario’s Integrated Energy Plan lays the groundwork for economic growth for the next 25 years. A key feature of this plan is building Canada’s largest energy storage fleet. After completing a series of nuclear and transmission projects on time and on budget, @ricbresee_mpp, @tylerallsoppPC, @davidsmithmpp, and I were proud to announce another successful project at the Atura Napanee Battery Energy Storage System. cbc.ca/news/canada/ot…

At OPG's Wesleyville site in Port Hope, we're boring deep into the ground to assess the site for its potential nuclear future. As part of the first phase of the project's Impact Assessment, OPG is working with E.S. Fox, Indigenous-owned Voyageur Services, and other local companies to conduct a geotechnical and hydrogeological borehole campaign. The geotechnical campaign aims to bore at 40 locations across the site, reaching depths of between 60 to 120 metres, and is expected to wrap up later this summer. Other ongoing work includes surveys of the area’s vegetation, birds, and wildlife, aquatic and surface-water assessments, as well as archaeological, socio-economic, and traffic studies. This important work is helping advance a potential project that could provide up to 10,000 MW of new nuclear generation for Ontario's clean energy future. Learn more: opg.com/wesleyville

Meet the colossal crane doing the heavy lifting for the first Small Modular Reactor in the G7. The largest crawler crane in Canada recently completed a major lift as it hoisted and placed the close to 2.1-million-pound Basemat module – the foundation of the reactor building. Now, this crane is ready to do even more heavy lifting for the project. Learn more: bit.ly/42usJTm

Ever wonder what OPG's Small Modular Reactor will look like? OPG's Advanced Manufacturing team brought the G7's first SMR to life with a 3D-printed model – giving a glimpse of what's being built right now at Darlington. Last month, the first SMR unit's foundation was lowered into place on site – a major milestone for a project that will power 300,000 homes once completed. It's another way Ontario is putting innovation into action to work better, smarter, and help envision the future.

Talented students showcased the skills that will power the future at this year’s @skillsontario Competition. OPG was proud to sponsor this important annual event, where more than 2,000 students from across the province competed for medals in over 70 contest areas. From robotics and electronics to carpentry, plumbing, and culinary arts, Ontario’s best and brightest put their knowledge and skills to the ultimate test. In the years ahead, these students will be the builders, thinkers, and makers who help transform Ontario’s electricity system, and help OPG build the next generation of clean nuclear and hydro generating stations.

In this #HeritageHighlight, we go back to the early 20th century to glimpse construction of OPG's Sir Adam Beck I Generating Station (GS) in Niagara Falls, considered the world's first true hydro mega-project. Originally named the Queenston-Chippawa Hydroelectric Plant, it took about 10,000 workers and five years to build the 10-unit, 410-megawatt facility. During construction, workers faced immense challenges and obstacles, including the arrival of the Spanish Flu pandemic in 1918. But they persevered to build a station that continues to serve Ontario reliably more than 100 years after it first went into service in 1922. Today, OPG is investing in Beck I's future, with a plan to refurbish three units at the historic station, along with 16 units at its neighbour, the Sir Adam Beck II GS. This work will ensure these hydro crown jewels can keep powering Ontario for many more decades to come. Learn more: bit.ly/3QOFCFe #HeritageHighlight #CleanEnergy #HydroPower

Ahead of International Drone Day on Saturday, we celebrate the great and valuable work of OPG’s very own drone team. Part of our Advanced Inspection and Maintenance division, these highly trained pilots and operators put advanced drone tech to work across the province - capturing the views (and the data) that help keep our operations running smoothly. From flights inside hard-to-reach hydro penstocks to up-close captures of a nuclear reactor face to bird’s-eye views of the G7’s first SMR build, OPG’s drone team provides detailed footage, information, and data we simply wouldn’t be able to get any other way. This team is redefining inspections at OPG - delivering better data, faster, and with safety front and center.

Last week, we lowered the close to 2,100,000-pound Basemat into place — the foundation for the G7's first Small Modular Reactor and Canada's first new nuclear build in more than 30 years. One of the largest crawler cranes in the world lowered the Basemat module into the reactor shaft at the Darlington New Nuclear Project site — 35 metres below ground. It’s the first time in Canada a foundation for a reactor building was assembled modularly – putting the “M” in SMR – as the giant component was fabricated, welded, and put together in one piece before being lifted into place. This was a milestone months in the making, requiring significant attention to detail and safety, as well as the hard work of dedicated trades and project partners. Piece by piece, we're continuing to build one of the largest and most complex clean energy projects in Canada today. Learn more: bit.ly/4mSWI0w

From the office to the powerhouse, Sam Amin has charted a unique path to hydro. With a passion for renewable energy, Sam knew she wanted to work in hydro and would do anything to get there. She got her foot in the door as a receptionist at our office in Toronto before making the leap into the general trades. Trading a desk role for the field, she quickly learned the ropes with a stint in OPG's North Bay work centre. Today, she's a hydro operating technician in the Eastern Operations Control Room at R.H. Saunders, where she helps manage the safe, reliable power production from 10 hydro stations. "This has definitely been a dream fulfilled," she says. Learn more about Sam's journey: bit.ly/4eKLnxp
