All hail the Queen of the North! Our Niagara Queen II icebreaker continues to conquer winter on the Niagara River. In January, the winter warrior set a record as the vessel and its crew worked around the clock for 30 days to break up a massive ice stop the size of 350 soccer pitches — the largest on the river since 2019 — keeping the power flowing at our Sir Adam Beck hydro stations. And she’s not taking a break just yet. The Queen was back in action this week to combat more ice. Thank you to the Queen II and its team, as well as NYPA’s William H. Latham icebreaker, for slicing through the cold to keep our operations clear and our communities safe. Learn more: bit.ly/47PQckN

A project worth celebrating! In northeast Ontario, our hydro facilities continue to provide clean, renewable energy thanks in part to the completion of the Little Long Dam Safety Project — a multi-year effort that involved expanding and rehabilitating the Adam Creek sluiceway structure, a key dam structure on the Little Long (GS) Reservoir, about 90 km north of Kapuskasing. The work has ensured our Lower Mattagami River hydro complex is prepared for extreme weather events while ensuring dam safety and reliable operations. All told, it took 1.4 million work hours, including 200,000 hours from Indigenous workers, to safely complete this project. Hats off to all involved! Learn more: bit.ly/4aNH40Q

A milestone 10 years in the making! Darlington Nuclear’s Unit 4 has been reconnected to the grid at 100% power. With this, our four-unit Darlington Refurbishment project, which began in 2016, officially comes to a close — $150 million under budget and four months ahead of schedule. Unit 4’s return to service is more than just a renewed generator getting back in action. It’s the culmination of careful planning and preparation, millions of hours worked, and the dedication of thousands of people. Thank you to all who made the Darlington Refurbishment a resounding success – from our employees to our project partners to the province’s robust nuclear supply chain. You’ve helped set the standard and now we’re ready to keep delivering for Ontario’s future. Learn more: bit.ly/4s3iujW

Take a fly-over of the future home of the G7's first Small Modular Reactor. With the project now in full construction mode, the site is a hive of activity. More than 600 tradespeople are hard at work, preparing for our planned fleet of four SMRs. Once in service, the first SMR unit will generate ~300 MW of low-carbon, reliable power for Ontario, enough to power about 300,000 homes. Learn more: bit.ly/4s7FJsF

A unique look 🔍 into one of our hydroelectric stations. At our Seymour Generating Station near Campbellford, workers are busy rebuilding the five-unit station's Unit 3. Here, they can be seen reinstalling the main turbine shaft. Next steps include runner installation, generator installation, commissioning and putting the unit back into service.   The station has been hard at work for nearly 117 years. Now, as it undergoes this major maintenance cycle, this vital hydro resource will be ready to deliver renewable, reliable, and affordable power for many more decades.

We're celebrating a milestone lift for a big hydro refurbishment! Recently, at our Otto Holden Generating Station, our team safely completed the lift and installation of the facility's new Unit 6 rotor - a crucial component that converts the mechanical energy from rushing water into electricity for Ontario. With a thorough understanding of safety procedures and the critical lift plan, the team executed a flawless fit with precision, skill, and teamwork. Now, this unit is on track to return to service later this spring to provide 33 MW of clean, reliable power for decades to come. Learn more: bit.ly/40ME68a

🔋 Did you know? The new Volkswagen battery plant in St. Thomas is estimated to need ~380 megawatts (MW) of electricity to run at full capacity. To put that in perspective, that’s almost as much power as it takes to supply an entire city the size of Windsor, Ontario! As Ontario attracts more clean-tech manufacturing, reliable and clean electricity - like nuclear power - will be more important than ever.
