@RibSteaks2022 It's a good rabbit hole. In particular you don't want your NOS enzymes to be "decoupling". You'll have to look that up. A few reasons that can happen. Leads to production of tons of superoxide and it can become like a positive feedback loop.

The vitamin A topic is officially BORING to me. I have a lot of direct experience with the topic, having "maxed" it for many years, and then did a low vitamin A diet for 3 years. I hope I my experiences can add to the understanding of the complexity around the topic. First of all, nobody is deficient. If it is important, it's really not that damn important if you can do a very low A diet for years and not get significant problems, and it takes 3 years for your blood levels to even start to drop. It didn't cause Grant problems, and it didn't cause me problems after 3 years, that weren't already there. I don't have a full explanation why yet, but my wife got super sick on the diet. Was it heading in that direction already? Probably. I'm guessing it had little to do with the low vitamin A and probably more to do with low calcium and low nitrates. That probably broke her redox and NOS pathways. Did the same thing to me. This eventually affects the immune system regulation and the vascular system. I got 95% better with sacroiliitis, and maybe 75% better with spine and joint pain. It was great, but also wasn't the root cause of my health problems. The interesting thing about it is this: it's "SUPPOSED" to pump TReg cells and suppress TH17 immunity. In most it probably does this. But in people like me and many others I've spoken to, in extreme excess it cranks TH17 through the roof and causes sacroiliitis, gut issues, possibly all kinds of spine and joint pain. Excess can cause hypercalcemia and all kinds of organ stress. Don't overdo vitamin A. But also be aware that if you are toxic, your body is probably dysregulated in some other big way to cause that, because you should be able to clear it faster so you're not accumulating. Lowish vA is a good practice and good crutch if you're sick but it's probably not the deepest root cause of your problems. And if you do a low vitamin A diet, make sure you don't break your NOS systems on the low calcium and nitrates. Don't drink the kool-aid all the way.

Lactoferrin and retinoic acid work synergistically to support epithelial growth, intestinal development and immune related functions. In multiple studies retinoic acid has been shown to induce or enhance lactoferrin gene expression eg. promoting IgA production when combined with lactoferrin. Whilst it's possible high Vitamin A toxicity could be a problem the balance of evidence points to it being better to consume some retinol to help lactoferrin. That may be why there's Vitamin A in cow's and breast milk to support infant growth, immune protection, gut development and overall health. Taking isolated lactoferrin on a very low Vitamin A intake doesnt make sense. sciencedirect.com/science/articl… pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10… pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/9828118/ pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/15738240/

@AndrewDBaird1 It is also not good to take lactoferrin with low calcium as it can cause too much acidity. Been there, sadly.

Garrett Smith for last 4 years at least: eggs (one large egg - 270 IUs Vitamin A) and dairy (100 mls of unfortified milk - 50 IUs Vitamin A) are high in Vitamin A and toxic and serve no nutritional purpose. But now he says nickel is worse for some so they can have up to 1,000 IUs of Vitamin A which is now not even high and you can get the nutrient calcium despite the 'previously toxic' Vitamin A. Bear in mind the lack of eggs and milk might be part of the reason for you absorbing more nickel via your leaky gut caused by low vitamin A. He's rectifying the problem he caused. An apology would have been appropriate don't you think ? 2:07:11 youtube.com/watch?v=Mxcuwh…

Recently I discovered that a number of ME/CFS people use benzodiapines as a "PEM shield": medical appointments, friends visiting, etc. I had never heard of this - it doesn't seem to be well known among us Long COVID newbies, but on Tuesday I tested it out: I WAS BLOWN AWAY.

There is some truth in that yet it's a big oversimplification as usual. I think one problem with the low Vitamin A is the total lack of carotenoids to help gut inflammation, barrier integrity and to help T cells that promote sensitisation. A moderate amount might help. The problem for many of us was overdoing them not eating some seasonally. Whilst you introduce very small amounts I'd also try to get some betaine to help with a possible functional B6 deficiency. Again, only 75-100 grams of organic whole wheat or spelt per day is all that's needed. Betaine might help the gut barrier via reduced inflammation and it bolsters the methylation-dependent histamine detox pathway.

Did I really just do 2 years of trying other things just to come right back around to fibermaxxing? The difference is WHICH fiber I'm maxing. No more pectin or psyllium. Trash fibers. Black beans only. Insoluble + gut stagnation feeds g-. Doesn't even take a day after switching to feel better.

The histamine and/or MAST cell issues are incredibly complex. The histamine is usually a response to another root cause. It builds up if DAO enzyme isnt working well. So someone on low copper might experience histamine reactions once DAO is working better with copper in beans, nuts, shellfish and seeds. Beans are a histamine liberator like tomatoes, citrus, strawberries, pineapple, bananas, chocolate/cocoa, nuts, shellfish and alcohol (especially red wine). Fermented foods, leftover meat and fish, fermented foods and aged cheese also are high in histamine. Wine can also have histamine. Stress can be a big problem. B6 helps DAO. Alcohol and coffee can inhibit DAO activity. A little food Vitamin C and quercetin foods might help. Vagal tone generally helps and B1, breathing, humming, singing, yoga, meditation or gentle exercise can all help. Avoiding sulfites helps. And moderating salicylates for a month or two sometimes helps the histamine liberator issues. Low stomach acid in a number of ways can make histamine issues worse. Vagal tone helps stomach acid. Food fibre helping butyrate can help. Zinc from foods slightly above RDA might help. Reducing stress, reducing food fear and breathing better will help stomach acid too.

Many of us tended to do better with beans once we were eating more eggs. I got weird cramps from them before but am fine now on 2-3 eggs a day plus 2-3 tablespoons of black eye peas. Karen Hurd's bean protocol explicitly also states 1-2 eggs a day after an initial break (in case of food intolerances, I'm guessing). In my opinion in the long term we want relatively more choline than folate. Folate doesnt fully compensate for a choline deficiency despite what Dr Simpleton says.

Fructose specifically downregulates tight junction proteins, increases intestinal permeability, and drives hepatic de novo lipogenesis, which impairs bile flow and increases LPS translocation.
