Just watched Quiet Days in Clichy (1990) by Claude Chabrol. It’s adapted from Henry Miller’s autobiographical novel, which I’ve always had a bit of an obsession with (I’ve read everything from Miller, including the correspondence) and I kept delaying this because when you know an author too well, adaptations usually disappoint. But this was a real surprise, even though the film isn’t very faithful to the text. It focuses on a specific episode and adds a subtle political subtext that’s mostly absent from the book. What really stayed with me is the set design. Some of the most beautiful sets I’ve seen in a film. It barely feels like real Paris. A lot of it was actually shot in studios (including Cinecittà studios in Rome), which gives everything this slightly artificial, almost dreamlike look that I love. You know that feeling when you can clearly see that the sets in the background are made of wood, like in much older movies? Chabrol leans into that. The cinematography by Jean Rabier (longtime collaborator who also shot Jacques Demy's Bay of Angels) is very controlled, soft, almost too clean for the subject. If you've read Miller, you already know that he was much more raw in his bohemian lifestyle, which borders on homelessness. I wish I could share more than four stills:
