Some argue Iran’s attacks on America and other nations have been a series of distinct events rather than continuing conflict justifying U.S. military action. This view is illogical and inconsistent with international law—@ordefk & Lt. Col. Geoffrey Corn (ret.):washingtonpost.com/opinions/2026/…

Some may argue that Iran’s attacks on America have been a series of distinct events rather than a continuing conflict justifying U.S. military action. This view is illogical and inconsistent with international law. Iran has for years exploited perceived moments of opportunity to launch attacks, directly or through its proxies. 6/6 washingtonpost.com/opinions/2026/…

Iran has for the past many years chosen to wage war against the United States. International law allows the U.S. to choose when to respond. This approach is inherent in the numerous times U.S. presidents and military officials have stated the U.S. will respond to Iranian aggression “at a time and place of our choosing.” 5/6 washingtonpost.com/opinions/2026/…

As Professor Corn and I explain in our Washington Post op-ed, the over 200 attacks on U.S. troops (in the past three years alone) by Iran and its proxies justify the conclusion that the U.S. and Iran were already engaged in an armed conflict when the current round began. As a result, international law does not require the U.S. to refrain from further military action against Iran until just before Iran launches another attack. 4/6 washingtonpost.com/opinions/2026/…

Lt. Col. (ret.) Geoffrey Corn and I document in our op-ed that Iran has, in the past three years alone, orchestrated over 200 attacks against U.S. military forces overseas. During the same period, Iran, as documented by the Biden and Trump justice departments, has attempted to assassinate on American soil President Donald Trump, former secretary of state Mike Pompeo, former national security adviser John Bolton, and Iranian-American women's rights activist Masih Alinejad. 3/6 washingtonpost.com/opinions/2026/…

Lt. Col. (ret.) Geoffrey Corn and I explain in our Washington Post op-ed that Iran was already waging war against the United States, and international law does not require the U.S. and its allies to endlessly endure and absorb Iranian attacks. America is finally defending itself in a war that Iran has waged against the U.S. for years. 2/6 washingtonpost.com/opinions/2026/…

Thread: Prof. Geoffrey Corn (formerly the US Army's senior law of war expert) and I in our Washington Post oped today explain why Senators Kaine, Warner, Warren, and others are WRONG when they claim this round of US and Israeli attacks against Iran is illegal under international law. 1/6

"International law does not require a distinct self-defense justification for every attack conducted once the right of self-defense is triggered. Once that right is initiated, military action is justified to achieve the overall self-defense objective, in this case terminating Iran’s capacity to strike the United States and its allies." -@FDD @ordefk and Geoffrey Corn in @PostOpinions: washingtonpost.com/opinions/2026/…
