The former US Ambassador to Syria, Robert Ford, acknowledges that "obviously" US-armed insurgents collaborated with Al Qaeda's Syria franchine, al-Nusra, to capture Idlib in 2015. Nusra has since renamed itself HTS, which has just launched a major offensive that threatens to capture Aleppo. To Amb. Ford, a "better question" is why Syria has been unable to defeat this insurgency, one of the most well-armed in world history, which, according to US officials, killed over 100,000 Syrian soldiers. I would suggest a different question: why did Amb. Ford and his colleagues knowingly cooperate with an Al Qaeda-dominated insurgency, and do they feel any responsibility now that Al Qaeda is gaining more territory?
