@SatlujAthabasca It did have the "Hollywood of the North" thing for a while. But cheap money from selling real estate globally probably ruined any incentive on actually doing anything productive

Why did Vancouver not develop an economy? Beautiful cities attract human capital. Human capital builds great companies. This is how Seattle and SF ended up with a disproportionate share of great founders. Vancouver could have done this but focused on drugs and condominiums.

@powerbottomdad1 That or people are just going to start having a stronger intrinsic desire to have children in the future through the sheer selection pressure of only people who really really want them having them.

@powerbottomdad1 By continually replacing your population until you have one that doesn't want immigration. When the only way to have people care for you in old is having an adequate number of people born earlier, the housing issue gets fixed.

so the default playbook for developed countries is 1. not building housing 2. not having babies 3. importing lots of immigrants. very few countries are not doing at least 2 of these how did we get here as a globe? how do we fix it

@flywheel2020 @ArtemisConsort No. Those were too wild and unsustainable (though they were ultimately effective at improving police behavior). We need a massive, sustained, and targeted "movement." "No Kings" is a start but it's not targeted and is too intermittent.

@dystopiangf E.g. Max Weber certainly did that. But you are not wrong when saying that *some* contemporary left analysis underweights functional explanations, focusing more on critique than on causal emergence.

I’m always so struck by the utter incuriosity leftist intellectuals have about why anything exists. They can spend hundreds of pages describing some “oppressive” societal structure in incredibly high resolution without ever once wondering how it came to be or why

Two things in be true at once. 1. Marxism is a fundamentally secular atheist metanarrative. 2. Due to Marxism's roots in a culturally Christian Europe, it is uniquely adept at parasitizing Christianity. More Christians need to be aware of the vulnerability and how Marxism can exploit and warp our sense of justice and mercy for it's own ends.

@mSanterre The real issue is young Canadians taxes go too much to priorities other than helping make it easy to have kids. Much more wealth goes to the elderly.

@spoozendooker @JillFilipovic @Noahpinion I'm not a fan of profit shifting schemes either, I just don't think this is something you can fault Amazon for. It's in the rules of the game, so it's fair play. It would be a dereliction of their duty to their shareholders to leave value on the table.

@orshick @JillFilipovic @Noahpinion It's the Australian tax office. And there's nothing good about corporations shipping profits overseas and avoiding tax in the societies they function in. That's not a knee-jerk.

@spoozendooker @JillFilipovic @Noahpinion Until the hearing is had though, the allegations are just allegations. Something isn't wrong just because it evokes a knee-jerk response. There are many things that seem bad, but are actually good upon examination!

@spoozendooker @JillFilipovic @Noahpinion That's an entirely subjective judgement. They're paying whatever taxes the jurisdictions they operate in ask of them, and those rates are set by elected officials. As long as they're complying with the law I don't see any case for criticizing them for their tax contributions.

@orshick @JillFilipovic @Noahpinion It's easy to find information that Amazon has been exploitative in various ways around the world. She clearly was not advocating becoming a criminal, as you put it. And Amazon definitely does not pay enough tax here in Australia, at least.

This is pretty basic stuff I'm sure she's heard the retorts. Issue is you can't reason someone out of opinions they weren't reasoned into in the first place. It would go sorta like 1. Underpaid? By what materic? Seems they are already being paid market rate for their labor 2. All the talk of not paying taxes, not allowing workers to pee are just nonsense memes. They're in compliance with the law. If the law is wrong, advocate to change it, don't just become a criminal

Owned by Amazon and Jeff Bezos is a billionaire who exploits workers (underpays them, over-works them, doesn't let them pee, gives them no job security, etc) and doesn't pay nearly enough in taxes. Still not saying it's ok to steal from Whole Foods, but I do think there's a solid argument that Bezos and his companies are bad and doing a lot of damage. My solution to that would be... force them to pay more in taxes and pass better worker protection laws.

@JosephKahn Lots of rappers were still side stepping these issues. I think the 2010s strain finally just got played out and nothing's come along to replace it in the mainstream yet.

There has been no rap song that charted top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 since July 2025. For years it was common knowledge in the record business that the main customer of rap was white kids. Yet over time, rap kept messaging to the white kids that they were not wanted. Listening to rap was a strange disassociative act where the n word was all over it but nobody could actually say it, though singing along is what you're supposed to do with music. You can listen, but you can't touch (or say). White kids played logic circles trying to lionize artists that clearly disdained them - "they not like us." The kind of fun party rap that Run DMC and LL Cool J popularized stepped aside for a political, separatist strain. The white kids got the message. They kicked off their Nikes, bought ONS, switched genders, went to Bieberchella.
