@JamesonDaniels Russia burning more than Canada doesn't prove forests are "mismanaged." It proves massive boreal wilderness burns. Canada's fires are often in roadless, inaccessible terrain with peat and muskeg that smoulder underground for months. You don't manage wilderness like a city park.

Telling Canada to rake its forests is like telling the US to drain the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea before hurricane season

In 1964, a big earthquake in Alaska caused damage in Canada. In 1980, Mount St. Helens erupted, spreading ash over large parts of Canada. The Red River of the North originates in the US and has flooded Manitoba many times. Which politicians do we blame for these events?

As someone who's had many of my Okanagan summer ruined by Washington forest fire smoke, this entire "smoke tariffs" discussion has me white hot angry.

@UnacceptableN My friend, look to logic, reason, and truth. In this case, a massive storm front dropped a swath of dry lightning across a massive area. Sometimes nature gives us beautiful geometric patterns.

FACTS matter. In several of the fires raging along the border they started in the USA and travelled into CANADA. That smoke Michigan is complaining about started in Minnestota.

Summer of 2016 I was line clearing by Citronelle, Alabama . Hot, but such a beautiful place. Lush green deciduous forests with some planted pine. Wherever I was, I was within a mile of some kind of road. Forest management in places like this is *obviously* night and day to Canada

Ontario's boreal forest is 50 million hectares, roughly 1 and a half times the size of France. I swear some Americans hear Trump and actually think he has the slightest clue what he is talking about. Utter stupidity.

The Boreal Forest spans roughly 6 million km and is widely recognized as one of the world's most intact, primary forest ecosystems. There's a conservation benchmark requiring at least 50% of the landscape to be kept free of industrial disturbance to maintain ecological health.👇

I am extremely amused that both Donald Trump and the eco-nutbags are united in their belief that Canada can prevent its giant-ass forest from catching fire.

@furmsies There were 300 initial attack crews in Ontario in 2000 - crews of firefighters who worked and trained for the whole fire season regardless of fire activity. There are now 160.

@furmsies Like it or not, Canada, in particular northern Ontario, has an extensive logging history. These fires occurred in areas of extensive logging, forest management, and fire supression until the 2000s. That activity is dwindling and along with it, organized fire suppression.

If every able bodied Canadian were to spend eight hours a day, seven days a week, raking our boreal forest, it would take between 100 to 1000 years to complete once. Fuck Americans are stupid.

There are ~9000 times as many trees in Canada as people. Most of the forest is highly inaccessible, far from any towns or roads. Any sort of large-scale active forest managment is a fantasy in Canada, and firefighting is mostly limited to the small portion near inhabited areas.
