Meet the jaguarundi seen on the @osaconservation campus. It’s 1 of the 6 cat species that live in Costa Rica 🇨🇷. While people rarely see them in person, our network of camera traps used for wildlife monitoring have helped us get a special glimpse into their secretive lives.

These photos are just 2 years apart. We planted these mangroves as seedlings in 2019. The 5 year old trees now tower almost 5 meters tall. Even better, seen in the third photo, they have started to produce their own seeds and the seedlings are growing.

Is it a ghost? Is it a ghoul? A spirit of the forest? No, it’s a Baird’s Tapir, or danta! They’re the largest land mammal in the forests here and a keystone species for the ecosystem. For how big they are, they are quite nimble and move quickly and quietly in the forest.

Our Lead Field Biologist, Paulina Rodriguez was part of a workshop organized by our partner @EarthRangerTech with officials from SINAC and other groups. Building these important collaborations around innovative technology allows us to protect more wild places in Costa Rica.

How do we protect biodiversity? Right now, people from around the world are at COP16, determining how to answer that question. We are based in a biodiversity hotspot. The scale of biodiversity here can be seen on our network of camera traps across the landscape in which we work.

On Global Big Day, we identified over 200 species birds around the Osa Peninsula! Over 70 people came to help search for birds in different spots in the area, from guides, scientists, naturalists and others from the community.

Prepare to be sniffed.  Camera trap footage from one of our trails shows this herd of Collared-Peccaries (Pecari tajacu). At the end you see mutual rubbing of scent glands which is a way of reinforcing group bonds.

We've equipped 19 Golden-Winged Warblers with nano-tags using the Motus system, allowing us to track their incredible journey. Huge thanks to our collaborators, Ernesto Carman, Paz A. Irola, and David Segura! 🙌 All handling and capture were conducted under ACLAP permits.
