I just read a story about a woman that really makes you pause and think about the pressure around “japa” in today’s world. She was 31, living in Lagos and earning about ₦45k a month while working in a boutique company. On paper, she was managing life, but in reality she felt stuck. Around her, people were relocating abroad, posting new lives, new opportunities, new beginnings. And like many others, she started to feel like she was being left behind. At some point, she decided she wanted the same chance. She spoke to a travel agent who told her the full relocation process would cost about ₦10 million. That figure was far beyond her reach, so she chose a different path she would do it herself. She started small. She used her ₦500k savings to begin her visa application and, against her expectations, she got a 6-month visa on her first attempt. That success gave her hope and pushed her further. Then things escalated. She sold her late father’s land for ₦5 million. She borrowed from more than a dozen people. She sold nearly everything she owned TV, generator, wardrobe, bed until she was literally sleeping on clothes on the floor. As time ran out and pressure mounted, she made more desperate decisions. She secretly sublet her apartment for ₦700k, bought a flight ticket for ₦1.9 million, and even sent ₦2 million to someone abroad who promised to sort out accommodation. By the time she was done, she had just ₦120k left to her name. Her family saw her off at the airport. There were photos, videos, emotions everyone believing this was the beginning of a new chapter. On the plane, she kept reassuring herself that life was finally about to change.

To the person who broke into my house last night: You knew no one was home, and you stole almost everything. But you made one big mistake you forgot about the DVR and the security cameras that recorded everything. I now know exactly who you are. What hurts me the most is that you are someone my family knows and respects. Someone we trusted. You have 5 hours to return every single item you stole and repair the damaged door. Bring everything back to the house. I know you’re following me, and I know you will see this.

Getting a disengagement notice on a Monday morning for a job I've spent only 2 weeks on has to be the most traumatic thing that has ever happened to me in a long time. I relocated from Ibadan to Lagos because of this 💔

₦900K for a training? Yes. You also live in a furnished apartment, get hands-on practical experience, sit for an international certification, and leave with a network that actually opens doors. Cheap courses exist. You’ve tried them.

Last year, a friend told me she was getting married. I was genuinely happy for her. She said her aso ebi was ₦25,000 per yard and ₦10,000 for gele. I didn’t even think twice. I ordered 4 yards + gele. ₦110,000 gone immediately. When the lace arrived… I won’t lie, I was disappointed. But I ignored it and focused on my outfit. My designer charged ₦120,000 for sewing. Then I decided to calculate everything: Aso ebi — ₦110,000 Sewing — ₦120,000 Hotel — ₦50,000 Bridal shower — ₦50,000 Transport — ₦20,000 Makeup — ₦30,000 Spraying — ₦50,000 Total: ₦430,000 That was the moment I made my decision. I wasn’t going anywhere again. The painful part? I later saw the exact same lace in Wuse Market for ₦16,000 per yard. And that’s when the question hit me: When did celebrating your friend become a financial burden? What’s the most you’ve spent attending someone’s wedding?

I sell cement at the market here in Abeokuta. A customer came to pay for 150 bags of cement, collected receipt and disappeared for over 4 months. Yesterday, he came back with trucks to carry the cement. He said he had been seriously sick since the day after he made payment, that’s why he couldn’t come earlier. I explained to him that the price of cement has increased since then and he needs to add more money before carrying the goods. I even offered to refund the exact amount he paid back then if he’s not comfortable. Omo, the man got angry immediately 😩 He said he’s not adding any money and he’s not collecting refund. According to him, “na the cement wey I pay for I wan carry.” He even threatened to drag me legally next week. Before he drags me, that’s why I said I should ask if I’m really wrong because honestly, market price don go up and I no wan lose money o. Pls what do I do now I need your advice it seems this man wants to chêât me ?

@Mikeliberation It seems the girls are rented. So they have the right to demand for payment to sew the materials. They should even be paid appearance fee. These introverts think they can eat their cake and have it.

During my cousin’s wedding last year, he bought aso-ebi clothes for eight girls and gave them out for free. Each outfit cost ₦8,000, totaling ₦64,000. After collecting the clothes, they started demanding that he also pay for the sewing. I was there with him that day, so I told the chief bridesmaid that’s not how it’s usually done. He had already spent ₦64,000 on their outfits, and they were still asking for more. He was on a tight budget and didn’t feel confident enough to tell them he couldn’t afford it. This is someone who almost had to borrow money for the wedding. The chief bridesmaid got angry, threw her dress on the ground, and left. In most places I’ve seen, the couple gives you the cloth and tells you the price—you pay for it yourself. But these girls got theirs for free. I don’t know… maybe his wife had hyped my cousin too much to them, or is this really how it’s done?
