@TemporaryLocat1 if i work up the courage, i might share my observations in a day or two. even writing those few messages is making me feel like i had my fill of twitter for the day. haha

since ~2020 i’ve stopped tweeting critical remarks about design. i figured life is hard enough, people are just trying to get by, and design doesn’t actually matter so live and let live. but yesterday i saw 2 particularly egregious (yet lauded) projects that are making me rethink

@TemporaryLocat1 i’m thinking about actually renowned work, largely by successful, independent practitioners.

@TemporaryLocat1 i’m glad you said that because i agree with you and this is worth specifying because i’m not actually talking about a senior designer stuck at a big agency producing middling work for a corporate client to earn a living.

of course i don’t have expectations that what i say would change anything. but it also feels slightly pathetic to sit idle with a griping inner monologue as i see more and more of our practice degrade into mediocrity yet only get rewarded for it.

does anyone have a responsibility to offer a critical view? what does productive commentary even look like? i know it isn’t punching down—jeering or cynical tweets disguised as intellectual debate—which were rampant in the ‘heyday’ of design twitter and i admit to playing a part

a big pet peeve of mine is designers self deprecatingly describing their focus on details and craft as “nerding out”; as though they need to apologize or seek humility for being obsessed with nuance and quality. i’ve never heard an artist say this.

the images are situated on a beautifully neutralizing yellow-grey base which are anchored by unfussy yet elegant captions set in times. the owner of the textiles also happens to be the designer: kitsos makris. highly recommend hunting down a copy.

coming out of hibernation to share this unbelievable book of greek textiles (published 1961). the design and printing is immaculate. plate colors are so vibrant they scream off the page. each textile is a painted reproduction—not a photograph—which accentuates the graphic quality

i’m genuinely jealous of (and grateful for) americans who look positively upon the future. i know pessimism is lazy and boring but i can’t conceive of a future that is any brighter than our past. nytimes.com/interactive/20…

i oscillate between "we are so cooked, follow your dreams" and "accumulate as much capital as possible to avoid being in the permanent underclass"

since everyone enjoyed the other schmidt poster so much, i figured i’d share the other two pieces i picked up at the same time. poetic, playful, buoyant works. i’d love to collect the full set from this series exploring folded squares.
