BIG FUSION BREAKTHROUGH: General Fusion reaches 8.4 million°C using mechanical plasma compression 👀 General Fusion just achieved a major fusion milestone with its Lawson Machine 26, heating plasma to 8.4 million°C (0.72 keV) by mechanically compressing it using a solid lithium liner. The experiment demonstrated the core principle behind the company's Magnetized Target Fusion (MTF) technology. During compression, the plasma's electron temperature increased by more than 3×, while plasma density and magnetic field strength each increased by about 10×. The team also observed enhanced neutron production, confirming that the plasma became significantly hotter and denser. Unlike conventional tokamaks that rely on massive superconducting magnets for continuous confinement, General Fusion's approach rapidly compresses magnetized plasma, aiming to achieve the extreme conditions required for fusion in a simpler and potentially more cost effective way. The company says LM26 is now progressing toward its next milestone of 10 million°C (1 keV), with the long term goal of reaching 100 million°C (10 keV), the threshold needed for practical, grid-ready fusion energy.
