In this spooky month of October, munching on these sweet and seedless clementines and pretending they’re mini pumpkins to ward off evil spirits🤣🤣 i think October has that effect on me😜 #ClementineLover #HalloweenMonth #FruityFun

@benkeene That's a stretch Ben. One was about having a voice, the other was about losing all voices.

This is Australia’s Brexit and it’s not the result a forward moving and fair country needed. Really feel for all those who pushed for change.

@p_millerd A question on this: Amazon controls the price in Australia and I have tried to lower it so that it's affordable in Aus and NZ. Is there any way around this?

#7 ROYALTIES & PRICING cont'd The publisher controls pricing. As a self-publisher, I like that I can have pricing discipline (I've maintained full prices except for two Amazon sales which you get nominated for) to control my own royalty rates. Here are my numbers

🥊Self-Publishing vs. Traditional Publishing I decided against selling my book to two publishers. I went deep into that world here's how I'd think about the tradeoffs: #1 PRESTIGE #2 PROCESS #3 CREATIVE CONTROL #4 EXTRINSIC PRESSURE #5 TIMELINE #6 DISTRIBUTION #7 ROYALTIES

Only losers go to networking events The only people you'll meet at events are people who want something from you or aren't meaningfully engaged in a pursuit of their own The easiest way to meet interesting people is by having accomplished something yourself

@levelsio If you're talking about BNI, or small low-fi/low-key meetups, I agree. But industry conferences, conventions such as a boatshow or SXSW, you can meet lots of relevant people. (Though your accomplishments come into play in any case and with that you're right.

@p_millerd Hi Paul, I know Jonny from London/Bali. I have also self-published recently on Amazon. Ingram isn't familiar to me, what makes it good?

One thing that’s weird about traditional publishing. They lead with a hardcover edition. Typically they’re prices at like $27. So demand is going to be lower given a higher price (compared to paperback). And authors typically only get 10%. So $2.80 in royalties. Paperback would be 7.5% of $17 or so so about $1.28. From an authors standpoint this “looks” better. But I’m guessing the hardcover is just more profitable or simply it’s always been done this way. For self publishing through Amazon you can do $5-7 for a paperback which is offered at lower price (thus higher demand). Hardcover can be similar (but often prime and fast shipping is harder for these) This is all not to mention that with traditional publishing they are often discounting through distributors like Ingram at 55% because they want to keep potential retailers happy. So the royalties are even lower. Whereas as a self publishing I actually don’t do 55% discount and keep it at 30% so my royalties through Ingram are also $7-8 (it took me a while to figure this out). Lots of interesting trade offs here.

There is loads to do, the roads are immaculate and there's hardly anyone on them, English is spoken everywhere and it couldn't be more family/women friendly. There's also a LGBTQ community. How can we get this page updated as it's damaging to the local economy?

It's only been two days but there is so much to like about Langkawi comapared to Bali. Just look at the pristine beach for starters. If you can't see a single plastic bottle, a piece of trash or waves that are not suitable for kids to swim in, there's a reason why. What a place!

In what ways do you train your courage muscle? In my 20s, surfing was this arena — specifically when you're staring down the face of a wave and have to fully commit... or risk a consequential wipe-out. This ended up translating to almost every other area of my life, I went from being a relatively socially awkward kid to developing a sense of trust in myself that then translated to so many other domains.

I learnt in Australia and Indonesia initially, some of my all time favourite breaks: Anchor Point in Morocco, Lagundry Bay in Nias, Thurso in Scotland... and Chacahua in Mexico (I'm regular so generally prefer right-handers) If you're surfing consistently and have someone to give you feedback + pointers you'll improve in no time at all ;)

It's taken four years to finally make it to Pulau Weh Paradise, in the far West of Sumatra/Indonesia🇮🇩. By chance the gaffer that set up this little piece of paridise, @Neal_X happened to be visiting on the same week. It's amazingly peaceful and so easy to reach from Sing or KL.
