Amazing to see how much AI progress we've made in the past year. Can you imagine in 2025 we were still talking about o3 and o4 models.

For the past week or so we’ve been at crossroads on what to build for our customers in healthcare. We could go full enterprise sales with large contracts or go the opposite treat them as consumers. We then go inwards and ask ‘can you see this as the last company we’ll build?’ Then the answer is obvious.

Just had a chat with someone about whether US vs China is winning the AI race. She’s surprised when I told her US is winning. She’s in touch with researchers and advisors to governments. She said I’m the first person that knows China well to say that. They all said China is winning. I wonder why is my conclusion so off. Probably my own ignorance? But then I told her about how Chinese talent is trying to escape China and the best ones are already moving to the US, and she’s intrigued. Of course China has more energy and quantity of talent than the US. They have the resources and smarts to achieve what Nvidia has done in less than half the time. Tech secrets also leak. But Chinese companies are at the mercy of the party’s political mood. Their valuations are artificially depressed. They have no way to capitalise the wealth they created. I’ve also visited China many times in the past 3 years. The society’s known hardy mindset of progress has recently softened to an attitude of indifference to their position in the world stage. It shows in how the China’s young talent are spending their time. Ambitions are harder to nurture in that environment. And this is everything in the AI race. Electricity can be bought easily, and talent very fickle. Or, perhaps, there’s something they know that I don’t know.

Unpopular opinion but $500K pre-seed rounds are plenty for most startups. Teams nowadays are staying at 2–4 members for the first year, are hyper efficient with AI agents and generating revenue quickly. Why do you need $2M if you’re not doing hard tech or deep research?

Pax Historia launched on Friday, an AI-powered grand strategy game built by @Eli_BullockPapa and @ryzhang22 at @ycombinator. I spent the weekend building a minimal autonomous agent to play the game. It perceives the full world state, reasons through a strategic doctrine, and executes across multiple turns. Run by ai and played by ai. Ran it on my account and it won the Pacific War by August 1936 (20 turns). Here's the breakdown 🧵👇
