See these three eggs? They are all from chickens, but not the same.
A is small and dark brown. This is typical of eggs from a pullet..a young chicken that has just started laying. Early eggs are often smaller and may have a darker shell.
B is linked to stress, calcium imbalance, or heat. The shell quality may be affected, but the egg is still safe to eat.
C is large and deep brown. It usually comes from a mature, healthy layer with proper nutrition.

Local chickens can live up to 10 years or more, but they don’t lay eggs continuously like commercial layers. They brood naturally…hatching their own eggs and even those of other birds. Although they grow more slowly, they offer steady returns with lower feeding costs. Their eggs are smaller but often more valued, with many people preferring them for their taste and natural quality. In fact, local eggs can sell for up to four times the price of commercial layer eggs. They are also hardy birds, able to survive in conditions that many improved breeds cannot.
