WHO IS A SAVED PERSON?
ROMANS 10:9-10
That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. (KJV)
Soteriology which is the study of salvation is a very important subject every believer must be skillful in. Apostle Paul commended his spiritual son Timothy for how the knowledge of the scriptures has made him skillful or wise in the subject of salvation which is through faith in Christ Jesus, 2 Timothy 3:15, “And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus”.
This means that after getting saved, we don’t stop learning about salvation, we continue to learn and explore the details of the salvation we have received. It is through the knowledge of the scriptures that we grow in our understanding of salvation. This also lets us know that the scriptures are about the saviour and the salvation he offered.
Anybody who studies the scriptures rightly would become skillful or wise in the subject of salvation which is through faith in Christ Jesus. The proof that you know the scriptures is by how skillful or knowledgeable you are in the subject of salvation. If you don’t know much about salvation, you don’t know the scriptures.
One of the skillfulness in the subject of salvation is knowing who is a saved person. It is wrong to assume that everybody you come across is not saved and also wrong to assume that everybody you come across is saved. Skillfulness in the subject of salvation will let you know when is a man saved. What saves a person? How is a man saved? Who is a saved person? And how secure is salvation in Christ?
Salvation is a spiritual experience and for that matter, cannot be seen with the physical eyes. You cannot determine who is a saved person just by looking at the person's physical appearance. You cannot also look at a person’s conduct, education, family status, church attendance, prayer life, giving at church etc., to determine if they are saved or not.
An unsaved person out of a self-disciplined life can put up very good conduct which should not be mistaken for salvation. Salvation is not good conduct or participation in church activities. Though salvation should result in good conduct and church attendance, we cannot use works as proof of salvation.
A person is saved when they hear and believe the gospel. From our opening text, a person is saved by confessing with his mouth the Lord Jesus and believing in his heart that God raised Jesus from death, which is the gospel. This means that a person who has heard and believed the gospel is saved. By having little interaction with a person, you would be able to identify if the person has heard and believed the gospel.
Whoever has heard and believed the gospel is saved. Your initial conversation with people should be what can help you identify whether the person has heard and believed the gospel. The most important information you should desire to know about anybody you come across is whether the person has heard and believed the gospel of Christ.
