The Presidential Naval Review held in New York on April 27, 1939, was a major naval display reviewed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt as part of the buildup to the New York World's Fair, which opened just three days later on April 30, 1939.
The review took place in the waters off New York City, with the assembled fleet anchored in the Hudson River and the surrounding harbor. President Roosevelt, sailing aboard the heavy cruiser USS Houston (his frequent "ship of state"), reviewed a substantial portion of the U.S. Atlantic Squadron and additional naval vessels gathered for the occasion. The review brought together a sizable concentration of warships, including battleships, cruisers, destroyers, submarines, and aircraft carriers, along with naval aircraft flying overhead.
The event served multiple purposes. It was tied ceremonially to the opening of the World's Fair, whose theme "The World of Tomorrow" celebrated technological progress and international cooperation. It was also a significant demonstration of American naval power at a moment of rising international tension. Germany had occupied the rest of Czechoslovakia the month before, Italy had invaded Albania earlier in April, and Japan's war in China was ongoing. Roosevelt, who had served as Assistant Secretary of the Navy in the Wilson administration and was a strong proponent of naval expansion, used such reviews to signal American resolve and to build public support for the naval rearmament program then underway.
Crowds lined the waterfront on both the Manhattan and New Jersey sides of the Hudson to watch the spectacle, and the review was broadcast on radio and covered extensively in newsreels and newspapers. It was one of the larger peacetime gatherings of the U.S. fleet in the interwar period, and in retrospect it stands as a notable moment just months before the outbreak of World War II in Europe in September 1939.

@BobCirillo @HiddenHistoryYT After capturing the Dutch East Indies, they had sufficient oil reserves, but the Japanese leadership feared loosing her early on and her one-way mission was an act of desperation, just like Kamikaze attacks.
English

@paddy3789 @HiddenHistoryYT Nope. The japs never had enough oil to use her and she spent most of the war in port as a glorious headquarters ship, then she went out on a oneway mission and was sunk halfway there. This, after she ran away from a few DEs and a handful of escort carriers at Samar.
English

@BobCirillo @HiddenHistoryYT The same could be said about any other battleship built during WWII.
English

@HiddenHistoryYT Most useless and wasteful ship ever built.

The 10.5 cm le.F.H.18 auf Sturmgeschützwagen ‘Versuchsserie’ represented a further development within the well-known German StuG III series. These vehicles had already proven highly effective in their intended role of infantry support.

@IamSvented @juoig7799 @MoDOT That's a question you should ask the drivers who aren't paying attention to the road. The fact that they pose a risk to public safety is the reason why TMAs became necessary in the first place.
English

@juoig7799 @MoDOT How many people need to be harmed because the DOT deployment of these obstructions doesn't conform with your ideal of behavior? Public safety comes first. And no, my phone is never deployed in the car.

Despite Hungary’s relatively small and underdeveloped heavy industry, the country managed to locally produce a number of armored vehicles.

Today’s “Odd Tank” is the 🇩🇪 German ‘Panzer III A’
Built in the 1930’s, the Panzer III A would be the first in the series of Panzer III Medium Tanks. Unlike later versions of the Panzer III that had 6 road wheels, the Panzer III A can be easily identified by the 5 large road wheels.
Only 10 Panzer III A’s would be produced and would be used for training, though later 8 of them were used in combat in 1939.
The main weapon is a 3.7cm Kwk L/46.5 gun.
The tank would be powered by a 250hp Maybach HL 108TR and have a top speed of 35km/h.

Today's "Odd Tank" is the 🇺🇸 American 'T24E1'
Built during WW2, The prototype T24E1 Light Tank would be created after the M24 Chaffee had already entered production. The T24E1 and M24 are largely the same vehicles with the same armor and even gun, but what makes the T24E1 special is that it used a more powerful engine from the M18 Hellcat and a different transmission allowing for a higher top speed and better power to weight ratio. Another identifying feature of the T24E1 is that the 75mm gun has a muzzle break (seen in picture 3 and 4).
The main weapon is a 75mm M6.
The light tank was powered by a 460hp Continental R975-C4 engine and had a top speed of 77km/h. For comparison, the production M24 Chaffee had a top speed of 56km/h.
