In the Seanad today, I welcomed the failure of the Social Democrats to remove the three-day waiting period for abortion. Thousands of women have taken advantage of this waiting period to rethink and as a result went ahead with their pregnancy. Surely this is a cause for celebration, not the opposite. It seems to be a strategy on the extreme Left of politics to keep pushing for wider access to abortion, if only to prevent any discussion of the tragedy taking place in our midst– a major increase in the number of abortions taking place each year, no government strategy to reduce abortion or promote positive alternatives, and cruel practices in late-term abortion situations. People with different views on whether or when abortion should be legal should surely acknowledge that each abortion is a tragedy and we should work to reduce the numbers taking place.

The reported miracle involves a young man from Colorado who, in 2012, suffered from advanced Hodgkin’s lymphoma. During a general audience in St. Peter’s Square, the then-Pope placed his hand on the young man’s chest, directly over the tumor, and blessed him.
