It's not deliberatively missing your point but more of push back on 'trivia game.' Connections is fundamentally about the meaning and relationships of words — the trivia is incidental. When a group clicks, it's because of what the words share semantically, not what you happened to know. That's what makes it a word game and not Jeopardy. And it's that 'click' from which I derive so much satisfaction from the game every day.

You seem to be deliberately missing my point: that a mini trivia game is a lousy type of group, as indicated by the difficulty rating for the Blue group a couple of days ago. Liu obviously doesn't have to use mini trivia games; the issue is how to make groups that are hard but solvable. The 5/5 games that are easy for me but are hard for others apparently confuse players with overlapping word definitions.

Today's 5/5 NYT Connections game had a familiar pattern, unfortunately: two easy groups and one practically unsolvable one. Unless a player has played video games, and recalls the scoring system(s) used that matches the one referenced in today's game—there's no way to group all the words through reasoning.

That is where the complexity of being a game designer/editor comes in. I'm flabbergasted, honestly, at how well the NYT's game team pulls it off day after day. It's a type of artistry IMO to do it. Are there some days when I grumble with the 'connection' on any four? Definitely. But having a little taste of this with my own work, I realize what an achievement it is to create a compelling, challenging, and often educational puzzle day after day after day.

It wasn't a try at a Connections group. Almost any four words can look like a Connections group. The difference between four words from a famous quotation and four words from a news article about Trump (BRING them BACK to the STONE AGES) is that more (or fewer) people might get the Trump reference.

It's named after Antonín Panenka, who had the audacity to chip the ball softly down the middle in a European Championship final shootout in 1976. The move was either genius or insanity. It worked. @pairpress They're just four five-letter words with the same last letter. Today's game was easy. The Blue group yesterday was practically impossible to solve unless someone connected them to video games. The words were unrelated to each other. "Obscure" doesn't mean "hard."

Yesterday's Pair Pressure (#82): Cocktails and moonlit nights. 🍹 10 tropical fruits, emoji to name — rated easy, but did 🐉 for Dragon Fruit catch your eye? There's no dragon fruit emoji, so a dragon had to do the job. Same trick with 🌵 for Prickly Pear — which actually is a cactus fruit. Fun fact: Two of yesterday's "fruits" grow on cacti.
