Whenever a financial advisor reaches out to try to make me their client, I ask them to walk me through how $10 of depreciation impacts the three financial statements. Gets them every time.

atheist/lol But since I'm feeling pedantic and irritable: "Best" is a category error here, because there is no degree of quality here. My answer is fully sufficient: it explains why, in the context of Yud's tweet, the existence of Ramanujan--and specifically how he explained where he got his proofs--has literally no bearing whatsoever on the question. The point is to give the purported entity a problem that *I* know that *I* cannot do (and then receive a verifiably correct answer). A possible variant would be for someone else to give the purported entity a problem that *I* know that *they* (the other person) cannot do. So if you told me that you can only multiply 1 digit numbers when a god brings you the answer, that tells me nothing, just like if you told me the same thing about multiplying 100 digit numbers. I don't know your actual natural number multiplying ability. And if I, knowing that I can only multiply 3 digit numbers managed to multiply 6 digit numbers in my sleep with the help of aliens, that also would be evidence of anything, because while I know that I can't consciously manage more than 3, I know other people can do that, and so perhaps I can do it when my thoughts aren't getting in the way. Marginal improvements in ability are not convincing at all. Now, if you told me that you could factor 512 bit RSA in your sleep because a god brought you the factors, and I convinced myself there wasn't some scam (I supply the number, faraday cage, etc.), then that would be evidence because I have good reason to believe that you actually cannot do that yourself, because I have good reason to believe that nobody can do that themselves. Ditto if I did that in my sleep. As to what Ramanujan could do himself (while awake, no gods involved, he could articulate what he did) we have very good evidence that it was extremely impressive. So the fact that there were some problems of broadly similar difficulty (as far as I can tell) that he got solutions to while he slept and that he explained this in terms of divine intervention is simply not the type of evidence contemplated by Yud's tweet.

BREAKING: Today, the D.C. Council voted 8-5 to move forward with a permanent youth curfew. Punishment-first policies like this fall short of advancing real public safety because they put kids at risk of unnecessary encounters with police instead of providing opportunities.

Black children across England and Wales are almost eight times more likely to be strip-searched by police than their white peers according to a new report by the Children's Commissioner. Nearly half of all searches resulted in no further action.

Someone in America needs to start a men's only gym chain. As a Catholic man that needs to lift and do cardio for physical and mental health, it's a war to keep custody of my eyes every single time. Women do not wear appropriate clothing. It's gross.

Complete breakdown of society. I get into a NYC cab. Newly arrived gentleman with no cabbie license in the license slot asks me if I want to pay ‘the flat rate’ or ‘the hourly rate’. Neither of these of course exist in NYC, it is a metered rate. I express firmly that I am a New Yorker and know about metered rates and to please turn on the meter. But I have no reason to believe this is a licensed driver in his actual own cab. Scary feeling. @nyctaxi

True story: When I was in the first grade at Bethel Elementary in Canton, I kicked a little boy in the junk. Why? He lifted my dress up on the playground and showed my ALF underwear to the entire class. I was taken to the principal’s office, where I was informed I would be paddled after my parents were notified. Daddy showed up like a knight in shining armor. There was no paddling that day. There was a trip to McDonald’s for a Happy Meal and an ice cream cone. After school, Daddy drove to the little boy’s house—a kid he knew well. It was his best friend’s son. I sat in the truck and watched as my daddy let them both know: if I was touched again, Daddy would whoop them both. I was a six-year-old girl. I had been humiliated and sexualized in front of all of my peers. The teachers did nothing. The principal did nothing. And the boy who did it would’ve gotten away with it if I hadn’t stood up for myself. Daddy made sure my bravery was rewarded. Then he made sure that I witnessed that bad things came to those who did bad things. It was one of the most precious life lessons I’ve ever learned. 💯
Mr PitBull Stories@MrPitbull07

Justin, a 9-year-old student, is spending his three-day school suspension working alongside his father after a playground confrontation led to a “zero-tolerance” disciplinary action. The incident began when another student allegedly cornered and attempted to punch Justin, who responded with a single defensive strike that ended the encounter instantly. While school officials suspended the boy for “handling the situation wrong,” his parents are publicly standing by his decision to protect himself, with his mother telling staff their opinion was “wrong” and his father rewarding his honesty and restraint with a steak dinner. The family’s firm stance that they “raise sheepdogs, not sheep” has sparked a massive debate across the region regarding school self-defense policies and the right of a child to stand their ground when threatened. As Justin completes his “work suspension” at home, his story is being shared as a powerful example of parental support for traditional values of self-reliance and the importance of stopping a fight once a threat is eliminated. The community is now rallying behind the family’s message, honoring a young boy who told the truth and refused to be a victim in a situation that has redefined the conversation on school safety and discipline.
