here's the last thing i'll say about the red/blue button debate. we now know that when polling ended, blue ended up winning. knowing this, isn't one going around trying to convince people to vote red unethical? absent of this proselytizing, people believe in a high trust society

@Son_of_Mars_III You can't. I'm in the room and I just killed your whole family to protect my family of blush button people. Unless of course we can't just construct this any way we want.

It boils down to if you take the thought experiment seriously enough to think about how it would run in the real world, and in the real world (imo) blues all die. My individual actions can’t change the outcome, but they can save the lives of anyone who I can persuade to vote red.

Amazing tension between “being rational involves considering second and third-order effects” vs “I will simply make the most rational decision by refusing to consider second and third-order effects because those are someone else’s problem”

@redtachyon The advocates for the blue button reinforce my decision to press red every time. What a smug bitch this Danielle Fong is.

If you press blue, the worst case is you die. If you press red, the worst case is you took part in an action that killed just under half of humanity. Clicking blue minimizes the worst-case moral injury. It says you’d rather die than risk contributing to the death of another.

Everyone in the world has to take a private vote by pressing a red or blue button. If more than 50% of people press the blue button, everyone survives. If less than 50% of people press the blue button, only people who pressed the red button survive. Which button would you press?

@lisavsworld Look at the profiles of the blue pressers. It's exactly what you'd expect.

A more interesting way to frame the red vs. blue button debate: which one would you press for someone you love?

@paperboy311 @vincit_amore @IterIntellectus The voting doesn't stop after the threshold. By pressing red you actually ensure you're own deatruction because their will always be blue pressers. You vote to actively sacrifice for your own survival when the survival of the whole has no sacrifice. You failed the test.

The funniest part about this poll is that people keep asking it, the majority keeps choosing blue, and a minority keeps getting upset that they're choosing wrong. At some point maybe you should revise your theory?

Then pick blue. I wasn't gonna say this, but if you're a person who thinks women are predisposed to picking blue (I've seen several of those comments), as a man, you should be picking blue.

Just before you press your button of choice, you're informed that in almost every hypothetical trial run of this poll, whether online or real life, the population has chosen blue above red. You fact check this. It's true. Your loved ones have already voted. What do you press?
