A better interpretation would be “competence” than “compliance.” The authors are justified in saying, “Testosterone eliminated the audience effect in prosocial reward-maximizing choices.” What is NOT SUPPORTED: “Testosterone eliminated feigned prosociality,” “decreased submission to audience expectations,” “counteracts conformity,” or “counteracts deceptive reputation strategies.” The task DID NOT measure deception, feigning, conformity, submission, or intent. All the learning task involved was learning which abstract symbol was more likely to produce a reward. Picking the wrong symbol doesn’t mean thinking more for yourself or having more integrity.
