@NorthBerwick_GC @kylie_boy1903 @manfescue The work that Clyde Johnson (@CunninGolf) & Chris Haspell (@manfescue) have done at North Berwick is without peer. Respectful, detailed and structurally sound. Some may not realise how fortunate the Club have been to have their restorative talent shaping these seminal features.

I get asked this one a lot, so me just put the question of my favorite clubhouse to bed for good. There are many clubhouses out there I love. To name just a few: I adore the grandeur of Sleepy Hollow, Maidstone, Winged Foot and St. George’s Hill, the elegance of Newport, Merion and Muirfield, the purity of Augusta, Cypress and Sand Hills, the uniqueness of Seminole, Bayonne, Chicago, Sunningdale and NGLA, and I even have a soft spot for the raw utilitarianism of Rye and Royal Melbourne, but the simple fact is this: Never has there been a clubhouse that so perfectly fits its surrounds as Stanford White’s shingle-clad, pillared and verandaed 1892 American Renaissance design at Shinnecock Hills. What’s yours, and why?

I’m off to the Highlands next June for a week of wonderful golf. First stop will be Fortrose & Rosemarkie - a course overlooked by far too many when they head north. It has a gorgeous setting, a lovely variety in holes and won’t beat anyone up. A perfect first round venue!

@pastegolfdesign Mow lines, restoration of the green pads, bringing back lost bunkers, and bringing back one or two (can’t remember) of Colt’s original green locations.

A stunning morning on Sunningdale’s New course, a bit of an amalgamation between Harry Colt (originally, in 1923), Tom Simpson, and John Morrison. It’s a fairly strong test of golf with a really wanderlust routing and a standout set of par 3’s. Hanses proposed work will be 🔥🔥

Lots of movement in the greens but contained within the size of the greens. Wider off the tee than the Old. Nowhere near the level of the Old’s huge dunes. Much more forgiving off the tee than the Old. Way, way more variety than the Old. More charm & more ‘I’d like another go’.

Trump Aberdeen II… it’s very good. The original course (the Old) is clearly dramatic but I’m not sure the absolute most was extracted from the site. The New definitely does that. Half inland/wetland, half seaside, there’s tonnes of variety as well as (as you can see) aesthetics.

A Numbers Game, sketching nine decent holes based on the numbers 1 to 9. Hole 5 snakes its way along a high ridge, with severe fall-offs on all sides. A lightly bunkered hole, with generous fairway widths.
