LIV’s “Lion’s Den” concept in South Africa this week. Feels like SA has a chance to be LIV’s next Adelaide. Market starved for top, top tier golf. Reportedly 90,000 tickets sold for the week

It was a great morning to get the drone up over Gullane. I’m lucky enough to travel the world seeing some of the most spectacular sights, but there really is nowhere quite like home!

The Scottish Open won’t be an issue in 2028 as it will be several weeks before, and I suspect not in East Lothian. The footprint issue is though. My hope is that the R&A realise trying to maximise revenue every year isn’t an absolute necessity and they take advantage of this being an August Open to take lower gate receipts. But maybe I’m just a hopeless romantic!

@ukgolfguy Just a hunch , the Scottish open being next door is a big issue. The Open has become a monster , the size of the galleries that the R&A want through the gates doesn’t really equate into the footprint either 🤷🏻‍♂️ it will return but can’t see it being 2028

Muirfield is looking great this afternoon. Alas I’m walking the dog rather than playing! The 2028 Open venue is yet to be announced and we’re overdue a return to East Lothian. This is the latest it’s ever been for an Open venue to be announced so we should know soon.

No, I get the point and it wasn’t great the last couple of years when the Scottish had bigger crowds at the Renaissance. But if they only sold 30,000 tickets a day, used the rail more and park and rides strategically placed it would be ok. Make that 40,000 and it could be unbearable getting there and then onsite. I have been banging on for ages that the R&A should be just trying to maximise income every year. And I think the August dimension may mean they have to make that choice here. But maybe I’m being naive!

@ukgolfguy Think you are under playing the road network it’s not built for the traffic that will come. Solution maybe to make more use of rail. Agree about footprint with limited access. Can’t see R&A wanting to reduce income as it’s about cash today. Love the course, hope it can host again

@jimmysp919 @NickTFord I don’t think that’s the real issue. It’s just not a big site so they are having to be creative, but hopefully not too creative with the course…

@NickTFord @ukgolfguy Didn't the R&A improve road and infrastructure as well as build several new holes just so the Open could be held at Portrush? Surely if they can do it for them, they can help get golf's greatest championship back to one of its most iconic venues?

@pawlspring I would love Porthcawl but I don’t think there is any chance of a new venue this late in the day.

@ukgolfguy They have left it so late it must be going somewhere different. If Muirfield doesn’t get it perhaps Turnberry is getting its turn. The other rumour was royal portcawl for the ladies was a rehearsal to getting the open

The issue is more about the footprint of the site rather than road network and accommodation. Edinburgh is close enough. There are only so many people you can get onsite every day. Personally I would love it if the R&A took a bit of dip on income and sold fewer tickets. Viewing has got so tough in the last few Opens as they have let so many people in it gets hard to see much and forget following a group anymore.

@ukgolfguy Would love to see The Open return to Muirfield, however is the region able to support the armada of people who would arrive. Road network, accommodation, public transport, hospitality would all be under intense pressure. Should the R&A wait till these improve before returning?.

@ukgolfguy @billbunkered Interesting - these Olympics seem a bit earlier than normal at July 14-30. It is normally towards the very end of July. 2028 in Paris started on July 26. 2020/1 started on July 23.

@ukgolfguy In what way would a Scottish Open followed by an Open Championship next door the week after be problematic? Would it not make a lot of things actually a bit easier logistically?
