Actually, really liked the Apple Intelligence announcement. It must be a very exciting time at Apple as they layer AI on top of the entire OS. A few of the major themes. Step 1 Multimodal I/O. Enable text/audio/image/video capability, both read and write. These are the native human APIs, so to speak. Step 2 Agentic. Allow all parts of the OS and apps to inter-operate via "function calling"; kernel process LLM that can schedule and coordinate work across them given user queries. Step 3 Frictionless. Fully integrate these features in a highly frictionless, fast, "always on", and contextual way. No going around copy pasting information, prompt engineering, or etc. Adapt the UI accordingly. Step 4 Initiative. Don't perform a task given a prompt, anticipate the prompt, suggest, initiate. Step 5 Delegation hierarchy. Move as much intelligence as you can on device (Apple Silicon very helpful and well-suited), but allow optional dispatch of work to cloud. Step 6 Modularity. Allow the OS to access and support an entire and growing ecosystem of LLMs (e.g. ChatGPT announcement). Step 7 Privacy. <3 We're quickly heading into a world where you can open up your phone and just say stuff. It talks back and it knows you. And it just works. Super exciting and as a user, quite looking forward to it.

After reading the @nytimes lawsuit against @OpenAI and @Microsoft, I find my sympathies more with OpenAI and Microsoft than with the NYT. The suit: (1) Claims, among other things, that OpenAI and Microsoft used millions of copyrighted NYT articles to train their models (2) Gives examples in which OpenAI models regurgitated NYT articles almost verbatim But the presentation muddies (1) and (2), and I saw a lot of commentary on social media that -- because of what I believe is a muddied presentation -- draws a link between them that I'm not sure is what people think it is. On (1): I understand why media companies don't like people training on their documents, but believe that just as humans are allowed to read documents on the open internet, learn from them, and synthesize brand new ideas, AI should be allowed to do so too. I would like to see training on the public internet covered under fair use -- society will be better off this way -- though whether it actually is will ultimately be up to legislators and the courts. On (2): I suspect a lot of the examples of ChatGPT regurgitating articles nearly verbatim were due to a RAG-like mechanism where the user prompt causes the system to browse the web, retrieve a specific article and then print it out. (If my statement here isn't accurate, I would love to see the @nytimes clarify this.) If this is the case, then (i) To OpenAI's credit, they seem to have already updated their software to make this much less likely, and (ii) This is also a much easier problem to fix than if an LLM were to regurgitate text using only the pre-trained weights, which AFAIK very rarely happens (and which, given its rarity, also raises the question of how much harm to NYT this has actually caused). To be clear, I believe independent media is important for democracy and must be protected. I also sympathize with media businesses worried about Generative AI disrupting their businesses. But I'm not convinced the NYT lawsuit is the right way to do this. Usual caveat: I am not a lawyer and am not giving legal advice or any other form of advice here. My team at NVIDIA is hiring. We 🩷 you all from OpenAI. Engineers, researchers, product team, alike. Email me at linxif@nvidia.com. DM is open too. NVIDIA has warm GPUs for you on a cold winter night like this, fresh out of the oven.🩷 I do research on AI agents. Gaming+AI, robotics, multimodal LLMs, open-ended simulations, etc. If you want an excuse to play games like Minecraft at work - I'm your guy. I'm shocked by the ongoing development. I can only begin to grasp the depth of what you must be going through. Please, don't hesitate to ping me if there's anything I can do to help, or just say hi and share anything you'd like to talk about. I'm a good listener.

Maryna, 6, is from Kherson region. Last year a Russian missile hit her home. Maryna lost her leg. Doctors fit Maryna with special pediatric prosthetics. She is now learning how to ride a bike using it. Ukrainian children had to become so strong. No child should go through that. 📹: Ukrainian Rehabilitation Institute

22-year-old British volunteer Sam Newey died defending Ukraine. Sam previously studied psychology at Birmingham University. After the full-scaleinvasion began, he decided to join the fight. Daniel Newey, Sam’s elder brother, shared news of his death in a tribute posted on social media: “I cannot put into words how broken I feel. I also cannot emphasise how proud I am of my little brother. He’d just turned 21 when he decided to answer the call and travel to Ukraine to push back against Russian imperialism. Sam, you gave your life for people you never knew and acted with courage, morality and honour. Not only are you my little brother, but you’re an exceptional man, a good soldier and one of the bravest people I ever had the privilege of knowing.” Eternal memory and eternal glory to Hero!
