One thing I love about Shadow Generations is that it brought back the implications of Sonic being the ultimate lifeform. I dont think its a question that requires a concrete answer, but I do think its a possibility that should always be there to ponder over. Where Sonic gets his incredible abilities doesnt really matter. What matters is that Shadow, who was created more than 50 years ago and trapped in stasis, woke just to meet the one guy in the universe that can naturally match him in every capacity.
