Almost a decade after the idealistic Declaration of Independence, Thomas Jefferson got more pessimistic. Warned it was "only a matter of time" before Americans were tempted by dictatorship. He warned future Americans to ward off the "wolf of tyranny." Please listen.

@ylecun That’s misleading. Most large employers offer paid maternity leave in the U.S.

Trump is wildly wrong when it comes to crime — violent crime rates are lower than they’ve ever been in the last 15 years. They’re also down 26% from Trump’s 2020 levels. @Morning_Joe

not even meaning to be ironic but the months of rhetoric of the need to "save democracy" are somewhat qualified when, within the Democratic party, it is taboo to even suggest that another presidential candidate be considered; even to hint at such an option, in theory, will result in being "unfollowed" by some persons vehement about hewing the line. what, then, is "democracy" if one cannot utter even an option possibility without being shouted down? either you believe in others' opinions being allowed to be heard, if not respected, or you do not. no? yes?

@TrackingActions I love this point by Wolpert and it is something I learned early in Jordan lab (spinal cord) in Winnipeg. The four F's are all about movement: feeding, fleeing, fighting, and reproduction.

@rodneyabrooks Language is not necessary for beavers to build dams, or birds to build nests or wolves to cooperate in bringing down a moose.. The computational story for motor functions is not a story about using language, not even when it involves learning a language.

I was interviewed for this story a few weeks ago. The headline is not what I would have written, but the content about warehouse robots, and how LLMs are not the key to making them better, is what I was explaining. techcrunch.com/2024/06/29/mit…
