@atjg__ The old town hall was falling down TBF. It was considered an embarrassment almost from the day it was opened. The replacement building is grim, obviously.

Don’t get me started on the old Town Hall in the Bigg Market knocked down for a similar eyesore.

@JonNeale And because it's all so boring and opaque to try to understand, people see their council tax bills going up and up while things get worse and worse.

They deliver the services people notice - highways, refuse, etc to mention just a few. It makes everyone feel the country’s problems, while bad, are much worse than they are. Particularly if you add in the cumulative decisions that made councils responsible for social care.

At least half of the perception that the state isn’t working / doing what it is supposed to do and the county is a mess is a result of a a single policy decision. Namely, the coalition decision to force overwhelming and disproportionate cuts on local government.

Ok. A DM colleague reminds me that there are some new planning powers for mayors. I will amend "no planning powers" to “limited and untested planning powers likely to bring their own challenges”.

This is obviously exactly the kind of thing strategic authorities should be doing. I worry that simply instructing them to do it in the context of the same local politics with the same incentives sets us up for a "we tried, you failed" moment.

This'll be an interesting job. You'll be working for a Labour mayor with a majority Reform cabinet, at an organisation with no planning powers. linkedin.com/posts/north-ea…

@robfordmancs @TheHistoryNov @Jonathan_Hinder I'm probably - or ought to be - a textbook labour voter. Northern urban, professional, comfortable enough but not wealthy, graduate etc. I'm not sure what my insane views are.

@TheHistoryNov @Jonathan_Hinder ...or Muslim families in council housing, or young non-graduates struggling to find steady work. Etc etc. Plenty of groups who are (a) not fully aligned with Labour members but (b) much more open to Labour voting now than the people you call its "traditional base".

The “Blue Labour” strategy still being promoted by some on Lab right is to try and win social cons while holding on to social liberals. Failure state for this strategy is failing to win social cons while alienating social liberals. Here is a map of that failure state:

Respect to council officers on Monday, explaining that the council can't spend cycle lane money on potholes, there is no asylum seeker budget, and free parking means more cuts on top of the already slated cuts.

I haven't used this site for a while. I got a few likes for a post yesterday and I'm immediately getting grief for a pair of anonymous randoms. I'm not even anyone in particular. What a mess it's got here.

@gm_stone It probably helps when you've been the local councillor since Newcastle was a county borough of Northumberland 😉

I was a bit anxious about this when I realised that In alphabetic order I was 13th out of 13 candidates and at the bottom of a lengthy ballot paper. Fortunately I was first out of 13 in numerical order.
Robert Colvile@rcolvile

Now the dust has settled from the local elections, it's time to talk about vote-rigging. In particular, the way in which a sinister force has been manipulating British democracy in council after council, year after year. That force? The goddamn alphabet. (1/?)

Surprisingly subdued response from the Reform delegation so far - although there is one seat left to declare.

Reform are now on 35 seats with one ward left to declare. That means they've secured a majority on Gateshead Council and will form the next administration.
