I took this photo in Cape Town when I hosted Cong John Lewis on his return to South Africa. He and Archbishop Tutu couldn’t wait to embrace one another. Brothers in struggle. Benders of the arc of justice. Joined in eternity. They’ve done the hard work and leave the rest to us

Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani
This morning in Biddeford, Maine, a 26-year-old man said goodbye to his wife and daughter and left for work. Moments later he was dead, shot in the head by ICE agents, the second man ICE has killed in six days. ICE is killing our neighbors. ICE cannot be reformed. Abolish ICE.

Trump’s in over his head. He has Obama on his mind incessantly. And he’s a racist. The latter point doesn’t make him unique in White House history. But it adds to just how alarmingly dangerous he is as evident in this petty competition with Obama that’s led to war.

Trump on Iran: "Obama was the worst of all because Obama actually went to their side, because, you know, he's a -- well, let's not say. Let's leave that for another time."

I absolutely love this. @NYCMayor had the vision to open up city parks all night during the Cup for hard working New Yorkers who never have time for the joy and community of the beautiful game. The results are magical. Play can bond a city nytimes.com/2026/07/12/nyr… via @NYTimes

.@netanyahu was asked by @MeetThePress about my illegal detainment with other Americans by violent settlers aided by 4 IDF soldiers. I called for arresting Yinon Levy, the settlers, and an investigation of the soldiers. Will Israel show any respect for American passport holders?

If you have nothing kind to say, say nothing. There will be plenty of time to render history’s judgment. Plenty of time. After today.

It’s all the rage these days for this platform to be filled with overheated attacks between “the left” and “centrists”on points of style. Meanwhile there’s hardly any debate on all the real threats to decent people. Years ago many of us warned that the Dept of Homeland Security was a dangerous construct that lacked accountability and would someday be weaponized. I remember Ted Kennedy warning that it was ripe for autocratic abuse. You didn’t have to imagine Trump in order to see the obvious about this post 9/11 monstrosity. But you couldn’t go there in our politics. And now the inevitable has happened under Trump. We’re all finally saying many of the same things about DHS and ICE. Instead of the spitting match between camps in the same tent, we need serious people to organize a vision for how we transform the surveillance state that violates rights of innocents with impunity.

The first ever red card reversal at a World Cup since 1962 and this man thinks we’re fools enough to believe it was an “independent” decision. For my fellow Americans who don’t really know the sport, this is unbelievable and just plain corrupt. I say this as a fan of the hard striving US team.
FIFA Media@fifamedia

FIFA President Gianni Infantino: “I have seen the public comments regarding the decision of the independent FIFA Disciplinary Committee related to the suspension of Folarin Balogun, and I would like to reiterate a fundamental principle of FIFA’s governance. “FIFA’s judicial bodies are independent. They operate autonomously, apply the FIFA Disciplinary Code, and decide cases based on the applicable regulations and the specific facts before them. Their independence is essential to the credibility and integrity of football, and this must always be respected. “Yes, I regularly discuss matters related to the FIFA World Cup with the President of the United States, and on this matter, I did receive a call from President Donald Trump, just as I receive calls from heads of state, government officials, football stakeholders and business executives from around the world on many different issues. During our conversation, I explained that there was an ongoing legal process involving FIFA’s independent judicial bodies and that the case would be decided in due course by the competent bodies. That is how FIFA’s system works, and it is a principle that I will always uphold. “I read the decisions of the FIFA Disciplinary Committee when they are issued. Sometimes I am surprised by them. Sometimes I agree with them, and sometimes I disagree. “What I always do, however, is respect those decisions and the autonomy of the bodies that make them. Whether we personally like a decision or not is irrelevant. Respect for independent institutions and the rule of law is what protects the integrity of our competitions and the credibility of FIFA at all times.”

Must we ruin everything with this corruption? The red card against Team USA was a bad call, but it happens. The players had accepted it with grace because they’re great role models and that’s the sport. This reversal is unprecedented and corrupt abuse of political power in sport

These eloquent words speak to me as the grateful son of a refugee who arrived here with his family, carrying little more than their hopes and dreams of freedom and a better life.
