I took this photo in Cape Town when I hosted Cong John Lewis on his return to South Africa. He and Archbishop Tutu couldn’t wait to embrace one another. Brothers in struggle. Benders of the arc of justice. Joined in eternity. They’ve done the hard work and leave the rest to us

Want to be clear about what I’m saying here. I’m not knocking the nominees from those cycles. I’m knocking the process of pre-ordination that leads to a lack of sharp narrative and innovative ideas. And a disconnection from our grassroots. We end up with mushy middling campaigns.

And that’s the end of that. Primaries matter. We need them to be wide open and definitional - not merely oppositional to Trump. No Dem Party coronations. If we had robust primaries with multiple viable candidates leading up to 2016 and 2024 we would not be in this deep hole

Janet Mills, the choice of the Democratic establishment, suspends her Senate campaign in Maine, saying she no longer has the financial resources to compete against Graham Platner, a progressive political newcomer. @llerer @katieglueck @reidepstein nytimes.com/2026/04/30/us/…

I’m absolutely gobsmacked by the amount of journalistic resources going into these “should Kamala run” stories. We’re a nation on the brink with tens of millions of people who feel utterly betrayed by all our institutions to such an extent that they’ve empowered a vulgar, corrupt man who has blown up every compact. But should Kamala run?! We need a wide open Dem primary with as many candidates as possible, from across our divides. The voters will get to have their say. We’ll be stronger for it. No coronations. No weeding by elites. A no holds barred contest on the economy, democracy, tech, health, labor, dignity. All the things.
Daniella Diaz@DaniellaMicaela

NEW: When I asked if Vice President Kamala Harris should run for president again, Rep. Troy Carter — a staunch supporter of Harris in 2024 — told me: “I can’t support anybody right now … It’s way too early. We’ve got to see what the field offers.” Another House Democrat told me: “I would have been most enthusiastic had she looked at the [California’s] governor’s race …. I don’t think I’m alone in this view, that I would have real concerns about her being the nominee.” A third told me: “Anybody who has 100% name ID and high favorables with the Dem primary electorate nationally should be weighing it … But is that a good thing for the party and the country [if she’s] the nominee? No.” More with @igorbobic @kadiagoba: notus.org/campaigns/kama…

@cbouzy Bro, I’m confused. What’s off about his response? He praised Jasmine as a campaigner and communicator and said that he wants her partnership. What am I missing?

This one is heartbreaking. My first apt as an adult was a few blocks from Caputo’s. I lived on their Olive bread and pastries and on the smiles they put on neighborhood faces. I always returned whenever I was anywhere close. 124 years. Saluto to a real NY institution
Justin Brannan@JustinBrannan

Caputo’s Bakery on Court Street, a.k.a. “the bread store,” has unexpectedly closed after 124 YEARS! They were a fifth-generation, family-run bakery for all that time. We’re all gonna need some time (and a seeded twist) to mourn this one.

Lindsey Graham is going down in history as the guy who mixed the kool aid. None of this ends well. The corruption. The sycophancy. The mendacity and malice towards all. None of this ends well. And they will all try to deny that they were at the dance.

Funny world. I walk out of duty free shop in Warsaw airport, side by side with white man who had been lurking around displays. The alarm goes off as we both walk through. Polish store lady of course only comes to me to ask me what I have on me from the store and to insist I walk back through. White dude strolls off unchallenged with his stolen goods in pocket. I can only laugh.

Soldier arrested for copying his Commander in Chief! All the corruption we anticipated across industries through Polymarket and Kalshi (which hired Trump’s corrupt kid) is of course going down. I’m going to place a massive bet that both companies will be huge political givers to both Parties and manage to evade any serious guardrails. nytimes.com/2026/04/23/nyr… via @NYTimes

This rough arrest of Councilmember @OsseChi went down as he tried to protect a woman, a victim of deed theft, who was being evicted from her home of six decades. So many questions about how, when, and against whom we deploy police resources.
Chi Ossé@OsseChi

Council Member Chi Ossé was just arrested while defending his constituent, Carmella Charrington, from eviction. This is the result of deed theft and the ongoing displacement of Black homeowners in Bed-Stuy. Our office is closely monitoring this situation and will provide updates as this develops.

🚨Virginia — it’s Election Day! Trump said the quiet part out loud: “If Democrats get additional House seats with this referendum, they’re gonna be making changes at the federal level.” That’s the point! Fair maps = Trump loses power. Please vote YES! 💙 #VoteYesVirginiaToday

Not enough people are talking about this. Hungary’s incoming PM has said that Viktor Orbán used Hungarian government funds to help finance CPAC, the flagship networking event for GOP candidates, members of Congress, and conservative media in this country. Under U.S. law, that is not just a Hungarian problem. Foreign governments are barred from spending money in American elections, and Americans are forbidden from soliciting or accepting it. If these allegations are true, this is a direct attack on the integrity of American democracy. We need a full investigation by Congress, the FEC, and the DOJ. The American people deserve to know exactly what flowed from Orbán’s government into this country’s political ecosystem, who was on the receiving end, and what it bought. ms.now/opinion/new-hu…
