I cannot stress how vital the next several weeks are for the future of public education.
This is a monumental moment for the hardworking public school students, teachers, leaders, and communities across Texas.
What we know for a fact:
(1) The empirical evidence on the success of vouchers is overwhelmingly negative. There is no unbiased scientific scholar who has produced meaningful evidence that vouchers do anything other than hurt the chances of ALL student populations in terms of receiving access to an equitable and excellent educational offering.
(2) This is not a partisan issue! Republicans and Democrats alike across Texas have come out against vouchers...frequently, out loud, and clearly...seemingly to deaf ears.
(3) Public education in Texas is already underfunded. Period. Point Blank. Despite having a historical surplus of funds available, compared to other U.S. states, Texas is WOEFULLY behind in its support of the public school system. Our teachers, students, and communities deserve better.
(4) The Governor of Texas has a Constitutional responsibility to "Sec. 1. SUPPORT AND MAINTENANCE OF SYSTEM OF PUBLIC FREE SCHOOLS." Currently, we are NOT following through on our constitutional obligations.
BOTTOM LINE: If you care about the future of public schools in Texas, now is the time to speak up. We cannot wait another minute, day, or week to make our voices heard.
As a public school teacher, and as a son and grandson of public school employees, I ask you to use your voice (call, email, show up, gather, etc.).
Silence is NOT an option at this point. We need your voice now if you claim to support your sisters and brothers in public school communities. Silence during this moment in history will be recognized.
