Biologists have been unpacking the mystery of the flagellar motor for decades. It wasn’t until this year that the final pieces of its dynamic puzzle finally fell into place. “My lifelong quest is now fulfilled,” said Mike Manson, a professor emeritus of biophysics at Texas A&M University who started studying the flagellar motor in the 1970s. “I finally understand how this thing I’ve been studying for 50 years actually works. That’s about as satisfying as can be.” quantamagazine.org/what-physical-…

I just read the WHO's official summary of their investigation into the origin of covid: nature.com/articles/d4158… According to them: Evidence leans heavy toward the Huanan Seafood Market but 22 of the 27 investigators say a lab accident is still not ruled out.

@DragonsofWales @samaltman @arvalis RJ is a SUPER legend but don't sell yourself short! You are deserving of reimbursement for AI's act of theft. To sue can seem petty, and I get that it's not really Kosher in UK or artist culture in general, but it's the only language corporations understand. Sue the fuckers!

@StatedClearly @samaltman @arvalis Vey kind of you to say, though I’m far from being in RJ’s league. I’m also in the UK, and I’m afraid our government and legal system seems to be taking a very relaxed approach to AI legislation.

@DragonsofWales @samaltman To be clear on why I think you have a case: Most artists (myself included) work well within a style already developed, but you pushed the envelope. You and @arvalis are among the innovators that I think really have a chance to win a case if a good rep takes it on.

"We show that, in TTC-A, steric clash between ribosome and RNAP upon ribosome 30S head swiveling inhibits 30S head swiveling, consistent with translation slowdown, and applies mechanical force to the trailing edge of RNAP, causing transcription termination."

@SDAFS56788141 That was the most recent, not the only evo experiment looking at these enzymes. If you want evidence that mutations can directly change hisA function, this paper did purified studies. They pulled mutant hisA proteins out of the cell to test new activity. pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pn…

Can you tell me what this object is supposed to be? I ask because I'm curious how subtle an illustrator can be and still get the point across to a general audience.

@PeshatDuel @McClureShawn @JoshuaBarzon Metamorphosis is compressed stages of molting. This is well written about and has been demonstrated from many lines of evidence. You can read about it for free on the internet, or just go outside and look around at all the intermediate examples.

@McClureShawn @JoshuaBarzon What the hell do nymphs have to do with metamorphosis other than a scientist branding it as "incomplete metamorphosis" as if it is a transitional form of metamorphosis?? Basically, there are these things call nymphs. Then, 50 million years later: Bang! Larvae, pupa, adult. WHAT?

@SaltAnd82424594 Complete metamorphosis is a derived trait. Normal growth with molting is the ancestral arthropod trait. There are many living examples of intermediates. Grasshoppers, for example.

@StatedClearly Metamorphosis dissolves the caterpillar into nutrient soup before rebuilding a completely new butterfly body plan. For this to succeed, the full set of instructions for both breakdown and reconstruction must already exist. A halfway stage would be fatal, leaving nutrient soup….

@PeshatDuel @TaylorLabGroup You seem to think the entire flagellum and its modern regulation system had to poof into existence all at once. In reality, new structures and regulatory systems emerge through modification of old structures and regulatory systems.

@StatedClearly @TaylorLabGroup You mentioned how the initial recruitment of the replacement gene binds initially with a low probability that increases over evolutionary time. If, instead of main() entry to the program, you disabled intermediate steps, the probability of recruitment is even lower
