@StatedClearly And so we can’t ever truly know what’s been selected for (and why). I’m probably not fully doing the objection justice. But, then, I’m not sure how much justice can be done either.

@GravityAllen Yes, lots of cases! In evolutionary trees there are many ways nature hides true relationships, one is Incomplete Lineage Sorting. When we have multiple likely trees, we use the rule of parsimony to choose the best one, but there can be many that are equally likely.

@StatedClearly Thought of this question during the premiere, but chat space was limited: Are there cases where we really can’t choose between 2 or more plausible hypotheses for why a trait originally evolved? Like, the evidence we’d use to decide is lost to history? Or can we alsways guess?

Here, veteran Brian McGinnis' forearm snaps as he's pulled from the room while protesting war. In most mammals the forearm has 2 long bones: Radius & Ulna. Brian suffered both breaking. Evolution fact: In horses the ulna & radius have fused, sacrificing rotation for stability.

I slowed it down so you can see how bad that was. His arm is definitely broken! A Marine was pulled out of the hearing after protesting US involvement in the Israel/Iran war, and was severely hurt in the process.

Today at 5pm eastern, the second episode in my flagella evolution series goes live! We take a slight detour to learn about the Darwin fish.

@CapturingChrist @ThoughtfulSaint Or there's China's Hong Xiuquan. Look that dude up! His Christian movement (in name, not deed) started a war that killed 30 million people and is sometimes said to have been the beginning to the end of the Qing dynasty (which ended a few decades later).

Even if Joseph was a fraud he demonstrably was a better author than twain. What Joseph produced in purely literary terms has been more widely read changed the lives of tens of millions around the world. Twain may have laughed but he will be forgotten long before Joseph Smith who is even from a secular perspective the most influential religious figure of the past 1000 years.
Zac@OchoZaco

Mark Twain had a way with words. “The Book of Mormon is chloroform in print” “It was an insipid mess of inspiration” “If Joseph Smith composed this book it was a miracle - keeping awake while he did it” “It’s literally anesthesia”

AI is cool and all... but a new paper in @ScienceMagazine kind of figured out the origin of life? The paper reports the discovery of a simple 45-nucleotide RNA molecule that can perfectly copy itself.

My thesis has been published! 🐜 🎉 Not sure if anyone is still interested, but my inexplicably controversial PhD thesis ‘The Evolution of Cooperation and Division of Labour in Insects’ is now available online 😊 ora.ox.ac.uk/objects/uuid:1… It’s around 4 years worth of research, so there’s a lot in there, but I’ll give an overview in the thread below:
