@BohdanaKurylo @Joanna_Szostek Thank you both for contributing, and Joanna specifically for inspiring the endeavor! I'm only disappointed that despite the lengthy publication process, the warnings in the forum are perhaps more relevant to the foreign policy community today than they were when we first began.

Some longer form thoughts about the tragedy happening in an area so dear to my childhood - the Guadalupe, Hunt, Camp Mystic, and Kerrville - and people trying to point fingers. patrickrhamey.com/saturday-resea…

How about we bring back “esteemed” and stop pretending that all our colleagues are “amazing” and “incredible.”

One of the more perplexing things I find about neorealists is that despite their complete reliance on power as a causal variable, they are often rendered totally incapacitated if you ask them how to measure it.

@blagden_david Second, a priori, the comparison has credibility. The Russian military suffered before NATO arsenals arrived, and it is misleading to suggest they've sustained a fight against such. They've fought a fraction of such, trickling in, and suffered enormous casualties as a result.

@blagden_david First, you don't want to use PPP as a measure of military spending because economic local context is less relevant to arms manufacturing, increasingly so as the sophistication of the weapon increases. PPP is good for comparing the price of chickens, not aircraft.

Still the “economy smaller than Italy” line? Despite >3 years of them sustaining a fight against the combined arsenals of NATO? - In PPP terms, Russia’s GDP’s closer to that of Germany. - If Italy militarised to the hilt and went on a rampage, SE Europe would know about it. 1/3

1/ Trump has been conned by Putin. Russia isn’t a global superpower—its GDP (~$2 trillion) is smaller than Italy’s and about 1/15 the size of the US. 🧵

@BohdanaKurylo Well said! It's exciting to meet young scholars just starting their careers and hear all the excellent work they're doing, whether in research, teaching, or policy-advocacy. It's the responsibility of mid-career and senior scholars to promote these future greats!

Leaving #ISA2025 with this promise to myself: whatever stage of my career I reach, I'll always treat junior scholars with respect and dignity. Having sometimes experienced the opposite, I'm determined no one else should feel that way.
