Instead, I shared the most painful and important lesson of my life. A lesson no MBA prepares you for. Without adding advertising, it was received extremely well. And I did get my loudest applause ever. My talk was titled The Book of Two. It had nothing to do with marketing strategies or growth plans. It was about the real cost of getting your priorities wrong. I spent almost decades in advertising, believing I understood success. Awards, campaigns, long nights building other people’s brands. I measured my worth in client wins and revenue spikes. I was wrong about almost everything. My wife Jo managed our life while I managed clients. When she was diagnosed with acute leukaemia in September 2023, the foundation cracked. After losing her in January 2024, I wrote two books. Battleship Jo and Joneliness. That was my real MBA. Here are ten lessons you will never learn in business school. 1. Time is your only non-renewable resource. You can make more money. You cannot make more time. 2. Presence beats presents. Being physically around but mentally absent wears down what matters most. 3. Love is the best investment strategy. It grows only when you spend it. 4. Your real performance review happens at home. Applause at work means nothing if you are invisible at the dinner table. 5. There is no work-life balance. There is only life. Work is a part of it. I made it the whole thing. 6. Your spouse is your silent business partner. While I built pitches, Jo built everything that mattered. 7. Regret is the costliest emotion. Every late night stacks up. The interest is brutal. 8. Vulnerability is a leadership skill. You do not always need to be strong. You need to be honest. 9. Memory is the only portfolio that survives every crash. You cannot trade for more of it. 10. Love becomes legacy. What you give turns into what remains. The takeaways are simple. Or what they STILL don't teach you at Harvard Business School. Your spouse is your most important business partner. Your family is your most valuable client. Your home is your most important office. Love is your most important project. Some steps to act on now: Go home early. Have dinner without your phone. Ask about their day and listen without interrupting. Smile as you mean it. Invest in moments like you invest in equity. Manage your time the way you manage your money. The most important deal you will ever close is with the person who waits for you to return. Because when the final audit comes, these are the only numbers that matter." Unquote.
