Footage from inside Sangster International Airport shows rain pouring through missing ceiling panels and flooding parts of the departure lounge after Hurricane Melissa ripped through western Jamaica earlier today. The Category 5 storm made landfall in St Elizabeth around 11 a.m., leaving widespread destruction. The Government of Jamaica is advising the public that, acting on the advice of the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) and in keeping with powers under section 26(2)(c) of the Disaster Risk Management Act, Prime Minister Holness has issued the Disaster Risk Management (Hurricane Melissa) Evacuation Order, 2025.

Staff at Hope Zoo in Kingston spent Saturday securing more than 1,500 animals as Hurricane Melissa threatens to become one of the most powerful storms to impact Jamaica. General Curator Joey Brown shared that the preparation effort was “exhausting and stressful,” but the team worked around the clock to reinforce enclosures and put emergency safety measures in place for mammals, birds, and reptiles across the facility. Brown thanked the “amazing team” that pulled together to protect the zoo’s animals ahead of the hurricane's arrival. He admitted that with preparations now complete, all they can do is monitor conditions and hope for the best over the coming days.
