Liam Bartlett, sometime so-called reporter on shonky 7 Spotlight and sometime employee of Shell International in 2013 - has been caught out lying on air regarding renewables. Again. According to Renew Economy, Spotlight and Liam Bartlett’s foghorn ‘dedicated more than an hour on Sunday evening on a report into the supply chains feeding into the renewables and EV industries, with a particular focus on cobalt mines in the Congo, and also activities in Australia. It was amplified on Murdoch and social media’ Bartlett was keen for everyone to know, in a dramatic spray, that every battery, every electric vehicle, every piece of so-called clean energy technology today ‘uses cobalt’. It turns out that this is NOT true. ‘Nearly every big battery installed in Australia these days uses (LFP) lithium iron phosphate chemistry, which means no cobalt, and no nickel’ Renew Economy says that Bartlett foghorned a similar hit piece on the nickel industry last year with regard to attacking EVs and renewables. As it turns out, nickel is also NOT used these days on batteries in renewables. So there is NO cobalt and NO nickel in new battery technology. Bartlett also fails to point out that these cobalt mines have been operating for decades - as have the nickel mines. Cobalt is an essential component for the things that Bartlett himself relies upon - his mobile phone and his laptop. Cobalt is part of many other devices that industries rely upon - but Bartlett conveniently sidesteps that important information to concentrate on a renewable energy product that no longer uses cobalt and nickel. So Liam Bartlett is openly lying on an already proven shonky current affairs program and does not mention current facts about cobalt and nickel mining. Why is Liam Bartlett lying? .. because climate change science, renewables and EVs are under attack via coordinated anti-renewable campaigns. These include astroturfing, fake social media accounts to manufacture opposition to renewable energy projects and ‘widespread use of misleading political advertising’. ‘Digital platforms are amplifying false and distorted claims through opaque algorithms, while the rapid rise of artificial intelligence is accelerating an explosion of deceptive content’ These misleading campaigns and disinformation have spread to mainstream media - and channel 7 have embraced it with gusto. Considering that channel 7’s parent company, Seven Group Holdings, has substantial ownership stakes in fossil fuel companies - I am not surprised that channel 7 is using its influence to spread misinformation and disinformation regarding renewable energy. In fact, fossil fuel companies are using their considerable influence, money and power via communication networks to run a destructive and misleading campaign against renewables. Why? Because they are fighting for the right to continue to exploit the planet for maximum profit with zero accountability and zero thought for the future of our planet. Renewables offer us a future for the planet. Fossil fuels do not. That’s it in a nutshell.
