If you ever walk down Embassy Row in Washington, DC, USA you might come across something unexpected - a striking white sculpture that immediately catches your eye. It’s Goddess Saraswati - goddess of wisdom and knowledge, gracefully standing on a lotus, a creation of seven Balinese sculptors. This masterpiece was a gift from the Indonesian President to the Indonesian Embassy—a powerful tribute to religious tolerance and cultural harmony. During his visit to Washington, DC, Indonesia’s president spoke about the importance of pluralism and presented this sculpture, honoring his country’s 3% Hindu minority. A rare but strong reminder of acceptance and protection of minority in a diverse world. And here is the most fascinating detail! Look closer, and you’ll see something fascinating—at Devi Saraswati’s feet, three young students sit, reading from an open book. Among them is a boy who would go on to change history. A young Barack Obama.
