@Palestinia12961 It’s not quite as simple as that. Yes, there are many (most) peaceful and kind Muslims. However, a vast amount of brutal terrorism worldwide is carried out *in the name* of radical Islam, so there is a problem to solve.

I am a Muslim and I am religious. Many say Islam is the root of all troubles and quote some phrases from the Quran, but they probably never opened one. Like in every religion, it gives you what you are looking for. Some evil people are using it to manipulate others and promote personal agendas. But it is a beautiful religion. The Quran opens almost every surah with the phrase: “In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful”. That’s what I take from Islam. Mercy and compassion.

The idea that you can "return" to your "ancestral homeland" after 3,000 years, killing and displacing its current inhabitants, is absurd and incompatible with the international peace. Being unacceptable as a general principle, it is unacceptable in this particular case as well

Zack Polanski is a dangerous man spouting dangerous rhetoric. He's not the only dangerous person in British politics, but he's certainly up there. There need to be consequences for his behaviour.

There was a period when a Palestinian state could have been declared: before 1967, when Gaza was under Egyptian control and the West Bank under Jordanian rule. There was no Israeli occupation of those territories and no settlements. East Jerusalem was not under Israeli control. But no Palestinian state emerged. Later, after 1973, another opening appeared. Egypt pivoted from war to peace. Israel showed it was willing to trade land for recognition. Again, no Palestinian state. Why is that?

Wrong. You know who Israel's government's most vocal critics are? Israelis. Hundreds of thousands of them who are demonstrating and voting. But you're not aligning yourself with them, are you? You're siding with the people who celebrated when some of Israel's fiercest government critics were butchered by Hamas. The only people who insist that criticism of Israel gets conflated with antisemitism are those trying to minimise antisemitism. And yes, Zack, that can include Jews. Like a Jew who describes British Jews' deadliest, most hate-filled year on record as a potential "perception of unsafety."

The first time I was flying to Beirut, the desk officer at London Heathrow asked before checking us in, “have you been to Israel?” We had rehearsed the answer to this question before. But Winston can't lie, so he said yes. I gave him the dirty look. There goes our vacation! "Well, you don't have the stamp on your passports so just make sure you tell the officer in Beirut that you haven't," she intoned. I was stressed out for the next 5 hours, and even more so when we had to face the border officer who, by the grace of God, did not ask us THE question (even though he took our passports to a secondary office for extra checks). Spending time in Beirut, you realize that it's the same Mediterranean light that bathes Tel Aviv; the sea is the same shade of shimmering blue because... well, it's the same sea. In both places, young people spill out of clubs at sunrise, the bass still thumping from rooftops that overlook the same ancient coastline. Both cities pulse with the same Levantine hunger for life: the clink of arak glasses, endless plates of hummus swirled with olive oil, the sudden eruption of dabke or house music that pulls strangers into a circle. Parties start on the rooftops of Gemmayze in Beirut and tumble down into Mar Mikhael’s narrow alleys; in Tel Aviv they begin on the sand at Gordon Beach and migrate to the warehouses of the Florentin district. These are both stylish people who love life, and who love to party. The energy is truly infectious. The accents may differ but something about this weird combination along with a deep sense of rootedness in community and the extended family really underscore how similar they were. And yet, there's been a wall between these two peoples. There are no flights stitching the 45 min hop across the water. No commercial trucks rumbling between the ports. Lebanese law forbids its citizens - inside the country or in the diaspora - from so much as speaking to an Israeli, a rule so absolute that some Lebanese friends of mine who live in Europe still glance over their shoulders before typing a reply to any Israeli even outside the country, whether for business or pleasure. I spent evenings in Beirut listening to Lebanese friends speak of Israelis not as the enemy but as people caught in the same endless loop of fear and longing. Decades of Hezbollah’s shadow have hollowed out parts of Lebanon, turning the south into a garrison and the economy into a ruin. Yet in the cafés of Achrafieh and the mountain villages above the city you hear it more and more: a quiet, exhausted recognition that the real hostage-takers are not across the border but inside it. I keep imagining the day the question at Beirut airport changes. I keep picturing the first flight from Rafic Harari to Ben Gurion. One day the music will be louder than the fear. One day the Lebanese and the Israelis will throw the party the rest of the world has been waiting for. I hope this is the first step:

A few days ago, Hamas told the head of the Executive Committee of the Board of Peace, Nikolay Mladenov, that it refuses the proposal presented to it via mediators to engage in any amount of disarmament. The terror group made it clear that its weapons can only be surrendered as part of a permanent resolution of the Israel and Palestine conflict and that it views the disarmament proposal as an attempt to twist its arms into accepting the unacceptable. Furthermore, Hamas said that it wants to separate humanitarian issues from political topics, expecting Gaza’s recovery and reconstruction to happen regardless of its status as a political entity or governing body in the coastal enclave. This not only shows that Hamas has always been unserious about the twenty-point vision and plan for ending the war, but it confirms what many have already predicted about the Islamist group. Hamas will never disarm or cease to be a terror organization because armed resistance is the only thing that differentiates it from the PLO, Fatah, and the Palestinian Authority. The likely scenarios for what comes next are as follows: 1- The maintenance of the status quo, in which Gaza is on the back burner, and Israel continues limited strikes against Hamas while the Strip is held together by a patchwork of humanitarian organizations, humanitarian aid, and commercial supplies and goods going through the Kerem Shalom crossing. 2- Because of Hamas’s intransigence and refusal to accept a core tenet of Trump’s ceasefire plan, he may give Netanyahu the green light to resume full military operations in Gaza to finish “the job” (so to speak). This would pose the most dangerous risk to the Strip’s 2 million residents, who are squeezed into ~45% of the territory that’s under Hamas’s control 3- A gradual return to military operations in Gaza against Hamas that begins with the progressive and steady transfer of the population from Hamas-controlled zones to the green zone beyond the “yellow line.” This would allow for an approach that may reduce civilian casualties while allowing for methodical clearing and holding of territory under Hamas’s control. Regardless, Mladenov, the Palestinian technocratic committee (NCAG), and the Board of Peace will not act in Gaza or proceed with any meaningful projects until and unless Hamas is dealt with. There is a limited chance that some mediators close to Hamas may be able to exert pressure on the group to compromise, but that is both a low-probability event and, if successful, will amount to little more than symbolic acts that don’t truly disarm the terror group.

I've received hundreds of hateful messages from Israelis due to statements and tweets supportive of Palestinian human rights. Just because Rom and I went through captivity and abuse at the hands of Arabs (in his case Palestinians, in my case, Iraqis) , Israelis expect us to generalize about all Arabs and dehumanize them. This type of thinking will lead only to more bloodshed and endless wars.

I have watched this country for decades, and I will tell you what no one on a podium has the courage to say: the people who oppose peace are not protecting Lebanon; they are protecting their own relevance. Hezbollah cannot exist without the “enemy” at the gate. Iran cannot justify its corridor to the Mediterranean without a front line that never closes. And every warlord turned statesman who laundered a militia past into a cabinet future needs permanent instability the way a parasite needs a host. That is why they prefer death over peace. Not Lebanese death, which has never cost them a single sleepless night, but the death of the system that feeds them. Christians watched their presidency hollowed into a rubber stamp issued from Dahiyeh. Sunnis watched Rafik Hariri assassinated and his political heirs forced to coexist with the architecture of his assassination. The Druze watched their autonomy reduced to a phone call from a handler. Every community outside Hezbollah’s orbit has been living under undeclared occupation disguised as national unity, and the absence of peace is the lock on the cage. Sixty years of rejectionism didn’t liberate a square meter, didn’t build a single power plant, and didn't secure a future. It buried 200,000 people, bankrupted a nation, exiled a generation, and delivered total strategic control to a militia that answers to Tehran and calls it sovereignty. Anyone still defending this isn’t a patriot. They are either an operative, or a hostage so conditioned by captivity that they have mistaken the warden for a guardian. This is why peace isn’t just a diplomatic position; it is the single act capable of collapsing the entire architecture of Lebanese captivity. The moment the war justification disappears, Hezbollah loses its veto, Iran loses its last ideological foothold on the Mediterranean, and every political actor in Beirut is forced to stand naked, stripped of the conflict they’ve hidden behind for half a century. And then, only then, the Lebanese can finally have the conversation that’s been strangled since Taif: what does this country actually look like when no one holds a gun to the table? Perhaps it’s federalism. Perhaps it’s partition. Perhaps it’s a model no one has written yet. But that conversation is impossible as long as one armed faction holds the permanent right to override every community in the name of a resistance that resists nothing except Lebanon’s own survival. The opponents of peace know this perfectly well. They know that the day Lebanon signs, their operating myth dies. That’s why they will fight it with every tool they have: religious guilt, nationalist shame, sectarian fear. Because peace doesn’t just end a conflict with Israel; it starts a reckoning with them. And they would rather bury another generation than face that reckoning. Enough. The absence of peace has already cost Lebanon everything except its last heartbeat, and the men who caused it are now asking for more time. They’ve had a century. The answer is no.
