More in-line with surgeon work related issues are talks at @PCSAsurg : A large @AmCollSurgeons survey of surgeons reported by @UCSFSurgery team and medical student Saffanat Sumra addressed surgeon workload. The greatest predictor of feeling overworked or burnt out is based on years in practice (pivots at 30yrs), and then #hours worked (pivots at 66hours 😮 in under 30yrs and 45 hours in over 30yrs in practice). Anyone else agree? And why are we abusing our surgeons so much? #PCSA2026

I do support however building a system so it isn't an issue - for instance if your sicu census is regularly over 20 you need 2 teams... instead of capping at 21

How many patients on the trauma service is too many? How many patients can a single surgeon see? What about when they have resident/APP support? ICU patients? See what the current national opinion is from an EAST multicenter survey by Wilson et al: bit.ly/4i6YCbz

It only takes one or two patients that have large wounds that need serial debridements/dressing changes to make the service feel a lot busier.

Definitely feel different levels of strain in different practice settings and with different team structures. Especially in the apprenticeship model where each resident carries their own list with attending oversight but without team/APP support.
