Having a good time selecting music for my Early American History survey class to fill the weird quietness during the 15 min or so that students filter into the lecture room. Highlighting music from the period of the day. I think it helps set the tone. Might make playlists.😄

@Boston1775 @profallison I’m so surprised to hear they removed those statues. They were brilliant and among my favorites in the area. I liked the vignette they established facing each other across the street.

@profallison The statue of Abigail and young JQ Adams is in storage, the city says, and will be placed in Marrymount Park.

Based on photos, I’m not a fan of Quincy’s new Abigail Adams statue. It appears to be based on a 19th-century illustration of her rather than any of the portraits made from life. And even then, there seems to be something off.

I am excited (one might say stoked) to be teaching this course next semester.

Complicated by the fact that perhaps none of the students present have seen a Rocky movie, it was perhaps not an apt choice.

In a moment of improvisation during my lecture today, I compared Valley Forge to the training montages in every Rocky movie and the Battle of Monmouth as his victory in almost every movie. Whether this was apt or just stupid, I’m not quite sure.

@AbbiSmithmyer This former Civil War reenactor and academic historian agrees with you completely. Romanticization and particularly playing around about death really bothered me. There are worthwhile aspects but there are big things about CW reenacting that should change.

@tlecaque I lectured on it last week…the whole Mississippian culture just boggles my mind. Under taught. I asked if any of my students had learned about it in high school. Not a one.

This summer I've transitioned from dissertation writing day in and day out to lecture writing day in and day out. I like what I do. Looking forward to the semester.

@rebecca_fachner One of my biggest peeves when giving house tours. Had to correct this myth all the time. That and “aren’t the chimneys painted that way because they were Tories??”

24 hours after passing my PhD defense, still riding a wave of relief and elation. The only sad note…I wish my parents could have seen this. I lost them both in the past few years. I think they would have been proud. Particularly my dad who loved history.

Defended today. End of a journey. It’s Dr. Patrick Browne now. Very much looking forward to lecturing at BU next year!

Wrote a brief squib about the Wenham, MA Civil War monument. What I find interesting here is that in 1879 the orator of the day was still very much concerned about southerners still attempting to overthrow the government. macivilwarmonuments.com/2022/05/30/wen…

Just saw Top Gun Maverick in IMAX and it was utterly incredible. Fantastic ensemble & magnificent flight choreography. And damn it got me choked up on multiple occasions
