What a privilege to be able to reconnect with and learn from so many incredible former @unboundedu colleagues this past weekend at #NCSM23, all spreading the word about #GLEAM math instruction! I’m reinspired to “fight forward” in the words of @lacrob (and Ted Lasso)!

One of many important reminders from @_CrystalMWatson today about how to ensure all students feel a sense of belonging in our math classrooms. #NCTMDC23

Great to hear from amazing colleagues @learnwithSAP @XQAmerica about partnering with students using a portfolio model! So much to reconsider about high school math.

Here’s @drtedcoe laying out three aspects of math learning. Let’s not overly focus on the third at the expense of the first two! Great session this morning from “Cousin Ted.”

Tomorrow I close out #NCTMDC23 as the keynote. I’m not alone though. I bring with me ancestors, math fam that speaks my name in rooms I’m not present, and the spirits continually murdered in classrooms. I am because of them… and many of YOU. Let’s get it.

Will you be at #NCTMDC23 or #NCSM23? I just arrived and would love to say hi. And if you’re an early riser come by the Union Station room (Marriott) tomorrow morning (Friday) at 8:00am to talk Problem Pairs, a fun idea I’ve been playing with recently!

@DrKChilds My golden rule of data: don’t collect data if you don’t have a plan for doing something with it. Don’t assess to assess! Assess to act.

We give children too many assessments, not enough feedback, and short time periods to improve. This year I challenge everyone to decrease the number of assessments given. Thoughts?

Acceleration, not remediation... @505Trojans principal Apodaca unpacks a strategy that works! "We're teaching at grade level & hopefully at times above & then we're bringing those kids along with the ones that are at the lower end. @zearned has really allowed us to do that."

If you are at @unboundedu #StandardsInstitute take a moment to meet Brooke and Max from @openupresources. Also make sure you attend the Lunch and Learn on Wednesday!
Brooke Powers@LBrookePowers

Having a great time at @unboundedu #StandardsInstitute with @MaxBrooks1! @openupresources is proud to be a sponsor and we’d love to chat with you about openly-accessible HQIM. Looking forward to seeing many of you at our lunch and learn on Wednesday!

This is very interesting research and I think there is a clear parallel to our collective obsession with long, linear paths toward grade-level mathematics learning within K-12.

When students have a long prereq sequence to get through, they tend to have a low throughput - a phenomenon called exponential attrition. Every course along the way might have good success rates - but the system can still have an awful throughput. eric.ed.gov/?id=ED565668 4/18
