Proof that ex-players are not always qualified to talk about sports.
The greatest litmus test for people who know ball vs. don’t is their opinion on Neymar.
Don’t even get us started with this video.

@trg_jet I’d pick Henry tbh …. Never got the Neymar hype … very skillful loads of ability … zero heart not very adaptable … not for me
English

There’s not many players I’ve seen im picking over prime Henry ….

Neymar is better than Henry and idc what these nostalgia merchants say

I would argue for a period of about 5-6 years, he was THE player that kids wanted to emulate when they grew up.
Adults now still scream “ROONEYYYY!” when they ping a volley over the park.
Gomo@user007321
No one grows up and says I want to become like Wayne Rooney.
English

From ‘Tshabalala!!!’ to the final it was elite - I was 18, that was my first ‘adult’ world cup, first time watching games in pubs. Went Park Royal for the final. He’s just saying that coz he was shit there. This was his 2nd goalless world cup. His only WC goal was in 2014

@AdunmoOlan53776 @UTD_CT @McFlybowy The euros in 04 when he had World Cup winners bouncing off him and terrified everytime he got the ball ..at 18.. that Euro?
English

@UTD_CT @McFlybowy He wasn't elite the guy is right I watched everything Rooney right from 2004 Euros
Dude is good but he's not an elite striker and why are you swearing at him for airing his opinion?
English

Rooney has one of the most overrated individual careers for a Striker for all his years in England, he never won a single Golden Boot.
And when you dig deeper, it becomes even clearer.
Wayne Rooney only won the PFA Player of the Year once in his entire career the 2009/10 season. For someone who played over a decade at the very top with Manchester United, in dominant title-winning teams, that’s not the record of a player who consistently imposed himself as the best in the league. And that tells you a lot when you’re discussing him among the very elite. Because when we talk about the greatest attackers, individual dominance has to come into the conversation not just team success.
That’s the key difference.
Rooney was a brilliant footballer complete, selfless, tactically intelligent. He sacrificed his game for the team, dropped deep, created, pressed, and did the dirty work. But when we talk about the very top-tier attackers, it’s not just about being good for the team it’s about individual dominance and he doesn’t have that
The best strikers of a generation take over seasons. They win Golden Boots, stack up individual awards, and separate themselves clearly from everyone else.
Compare that to Harry Kane, Robert Lewandowski, and Luis Suárez players who didn’t just contribute, but dominated. Multiple top-scorer awards, historic goal numbers, seasons where they were undeniably the best.
Rooney had moments. Those players had eras.
So when people elevate Rooney purely off nostalgia, it needs balance. He’s a legend of the game, no question but individually, he never reached that consistent, season-defining level that separates the great from the undeniable elite.

@McFlybowy Drogba 100000% deserved that PFA POTY also. Was easily better than Rooney that year.

Does Rooney consider himself as a
top player? Because Neymar was better than Rooney.
